Mangaluru: Prices nosedive as small fish consignments to Kerala stopped

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SP)

Mangaluru, Sep 6: As smaller fish are no longer being supplied to Kerala from here, fish prices have gone down. As a result, on Sunday, mackerel was sold at the fishing dock here for as low as Rs 55 per kg.

The reason for the fall in prices is that purse seine boats engaged in fishing are getting large catches of smaller fishes including mackerel. At the same time, smaller fishes are not being transported to Kerala and other places. As the sale of big catches are confined to local market, the prices have fallen. Till recently, fresh mackerels were sold for Rs 80 to 90 per kg.

The fishermen attribute this to the mackerel catches being high in Tamil Nadu and Kerala. In observance of certain religious austerities in Kerala, people do not consume fish till September 17, it is said. This has also influenced the fish prices.

There is good demand for high-quality fishes like pomfret, king fish, etc command good demand in Kerala, Goa, Gujarat etc and they get exported to these markets. However, when a boat full of pomfret and kingfish were caught here and at Malpe during the last week, the rate had come down to Rs 350 a kg. Still, kingfish, pomfret etc are sold in the local market at prices that are lower as compared to earlier one. Fresh fish are also available in hotels now. Because of this phenomenon, fishermen who get good catches are not able to make good money.

Paap Cynthia why the vaccine reacted. She always compllains that fish has become so expensive. Only podi meen that too Rs. 100 plus. I like borsi masli prepate with tender mango or bimbli. In Kuwait catching white promfret and shimps is restricted for some month allowing them to grow big. In India no such restrictions. Fish from India southern states is exported to Gulf countries.

Fish from Mangaluru often contains formalin and ammonia. Government should take strict action against this.

Flavian Kuwait,I think you have to wait for some time for her fish curry .Since as I understood she is still requires some time to rehabilitate from her vaccine complications .Right Cynthi ?However I can only ask fishermen please dont catch too much small fish ,let it in see ,so that fish can become big and have more next year.Otherwise see will be complete empty within short time.we want next year too isnt it?

Firstly our state of Karnataka people should get fish at reasonable rates subject to fisherman get their Rates . Or else the centre should interfere and put a cap on fishes so that the fisherman can get his dues . If any over supply then sell it to other states.

What a fool these fish sellers have made of us locals ! We weren't knowing that our neighbor state is getting the fish by charging us a bomb for us Mangaloreans for whatever fish remains behind. We paid Rs. 350/- for a Kg of Mackerel and 250/- for sardines. Now it has come down below 100/- ? Our government has no morality to provide food to it's citizens first and then to outsiders. Shame Shame ! C. T. Ravi, Shobhakka, it's fish, not Beef that we are asking for !

Fish prices can’t be controlled by government ,it fluctuates by demand & supply ,First let the government build a clean market to these fisherwomen ,Then we can talk about controlling prices
