Seven including woman held for killing 38 monkeys in Hassan

Hassan, Aug 3 (IANS): The forest department and police have arrested seven persons, including a woman in connection with the killing of 38 monkeys in the Hassan district.

The police said on Tuesday that all the arrested persons were monkey catchers and villagers had funded them to catch monkeys.

The accused have been identified as Ramu, Yashoda, Manja, Manje Gowda, Iyyangari, Srikanth and Ramanuja Iyengar. All of them have been sent to judicial custody.

The incident had taken place in the Chowdanahalli village on July 29. Miscreants had stuffed the monkeys in gunny bags and thrown them by the roadside.

The incident had come to light when the local youths, after finding the gunny bags lying on the roadside, opened them.

Initially, the reports suggested that 30 monkeys were killed. Later on, it was confirmed that 38 monkeys were killed in the incident.

Taking suo motu cognisance of the incident, the High Court of Karnataka had ordered a PIL in the matter.

The forest department and police intensified investigations and arrested the accused persons from the surrounding villages.

The investigations revealed that villagers of Udane after becoming wary of monkey menace had approached the accused persons asking them to help them to get rid of monkeys.

They had collected and paid Rs 80,000 to them. The accused fed biscuits, bread and other food items to the monkeys for a week. Then, they were trapped in a box. The accused stuffed them into gunny bags and threw them by the roadside in a distant village.

The monkeys died due to suffocation and the post mortem report is awaited.

It is learnt that the villagers who hired the monkey catchers performed a special pooja ceremony at the local temple to wash away their sins as monkeys are worshipped and seen as lord Hanuman in the Hindu religion.

We blame monkeys .we blame people who kill monkeys. As I was small there were lot of monkeys in forest near our house .But I dont remember monkeys coming to our area for destroying vegetable .They had there fruits ,for their daily needs.Like small wild jackfruit ,and other fruits .Now slowly people started to cut forest and they lost their habitants ,no food came to human habitants and found enough food.Same with other wild animals .Only sometime back I read in daiji govt is thinking of planting some fruits trees in Forest area. But thinking to planting and getting fruits is long way .Best is govt.have to buy fruits or vegetables which are not for sale from vendors, and bring it to forest area ,far from people live and cultivate vegetables ,so that they live there ,dont come to agriculture area.Whereas in Ghats people are feeding them in temples for monkeys and rates which breed without control.

And government taking action on the people then cuts government responsibility to look rgat monkeys should not destroys hard work of farmers...

Some of Malayalis near Shibaje and Nelyadi area eat monkeys. You can notice no monkeys that area. They shoot so many at a time so no monkey seen there now. But it is not a good deal. Even all animals have the right to live.Human encroachment of the forest or feeding wild animals are the main cause. Because some feed them they become easy with humans and attack crops.

Monkey Menace is high and farmers are facing lots of problem with that, The Forest department must do something about it. Ideally, they must create small forest in every region and attract monkeys into it and feed them . since they are territorial they will not allow the other band to come near it. once they are fed well they wouldn't make much of trouble.

These people have committed a mistake and does not deserve to be in Jail. The actual blame has to go on Govt. which is allowing and opening of forest lands for mining and commercial exploitation. These peopele I am sure are poor and have done this just for satisfying their hunger. The courts in India are not acting when people are lynched in the name of religion or when innocent people are being arrested without any evidence and put behind bars.

You pay to kill monkeys and then go to temple for prayers to wash away your sins. What a sick mentality. Also monkeys are seen as Lord Hanuman. We have lost all humanity in terms with humans and in terms with animals.

Can the forest dept answer what's the solution for Monkey and Elephants in our land ? Only planters understand the menace & havoc these monkeys and elephants are creating in our farm. Forget growing fruits or vegetables, we cant even grow regular crops.
