Sushil Creates History, Wins Gold at World Wrestling Championship


New Delhi, Sep 13 (IANS): Sushil Kumar Sunday created history by becoming the first Indian wrestler to win a gold medal at the World Wrestling Championships in Moscow.

Sushil, 27, beat Russia's Gogaev Alan 3-1 in the final round of the 66 kg category. There were 35 wrestlers in this weight category.

The 2008 Beijing Olympic bronze winner won the first bout 2-1 and the second 1-0.

Sushil beat Akritidis Anastasios of Greece (first round), Martin Sebastian of Germany (second round), Buyanjav Batzorig of Mongolia (third round), Hasanov Jabrayil of Azerbaijan (fourth round) enroute his title win at the championship.

Sushil, who also won a gold in the 66 kg free style Asian Wrestling Championship here in May, begins as a favourite for the Oct 3-14 Commonwealth Games.
