Mangaluru, May 7: As the Dakshina Kannada district administration has issued new guidelines restricting people's movement to buy essential commodities to only three hours from Friday and complete lockdown will be imposed on Saturday and Sunday, following a huge spike in Covid-19 cases in the district, large number of people flocked to buy the essential commodities on Friday May 7 morning.

As the district administration permitted the public to buy the essential commodities only between 6 am to 9 am, a huge number of people were seen at grocery shops, fish markets, meat stalls, and other essential items. Interestingly, people made a beeline to the liquor stores as well.

Soon after 9 am, police were seen on the roads regulating public's movement. Police Commissioner N Shashi Kumar and the DCPs visited various places in the city to monitor the situation.

It may be recalled that district in-charge minister Kota Srinivas Poojary on Thursday chaired an emergency meeting with elected representatives, health officials, and the police personnel and directed them to implement the lockdown orders effectively.

On Saturday and Sunday, the district administration has ordered for the complete lockdown so that essential commodities and commercial establishments will be closed and only HOPCOMS, milk shops, vegetable and fruits selling push-carts will be allowed.

The politicians have already done the damage so deeply.. now locking down the public inside is not the solution ... Block the city ward wise completely and let the public go out for grocery in that ward and not to roam in and around Mangalore...

Absolutely right statement. Today got fed-up with huge crowd at my regular super market, as today till 9.00am and next two days full lockdown. People having authority are IPS, IAS having good sense of brain should define the brainless politicians, the pro and cons of sudden reduced hours. Now it is very dangerous people rush like mad no social distance no care for covid. All safety y protocols are left in air dur Also shortage of commodity supply is other added problem.

Vicky chopra, Why should not ask the question now? Who created this havoc? Why it was so necessary to have byelection and elections at other states this time? why didn't it adjourned to some other time when this pandemic was cooldown? It is democracy. The Govt elected by casting vote by the republic of Indian Citizen you and me and even the lavish expenditure these elected member do from our/your tax money. So have the right to ask question.

You cant achieve anything from these kind of arrangement instead it will increase and create more trouble !! when you given limited time all the people surge into the public places without any NORMS !! specifically distance maintaining !! even they return back to home not following the hand wash including washing the things they bring into the house. ( vegetables )

Home delivery should be allowed. At least 30 percent will opt for it. Helps reduce crowds

In 1st phase as done in western countries please lock down all the things for atleast two weeks period. Deploy army on road. Take stern action if found wrong. Place barricades everywhere. Only person who is in emergency service given free passage. Otherwise iwont able to bring in control.

I thought only Politicians were stupid.. now turns out that the DC is too. If you have a sudden lockdown and people rush to buy groceries... the contact is more and of course there will be a quicker spread of COVID .

The geniuses need to be awarded the "Late Latif Medal of InAction" for stunts like these. How to do you break the chain? Be forcing people crowd at places to buy essentials??? How stupid can anyone get? It would have been far better had they let groceries stay open till 10/12. Crowds anyway was less because the timings. But now 3 hours? Is it enough? Besides, these geniuses don't seem to understand that the current rise in cases are due to infections that happened 7-14 days ago. But for these geniuses, breaking the chain is like preparing 2 minute noodles - expect instant results!!! Rather they did not stop Kolaas & Boothas & Jaathreys or other gatherings from happening 3-4 weeks ago and this is possibly why the spread occurred. Bravo DK adminstration, Bravo!!!!!

With due respect to authorities who has gone for total weekend lockdown, I don't understand reasoning behind changing the timing from 6 to 9 just previous day of total lockdown? Naturally, people will rush. If you are announcing 2 days total lockdown, logically there is no need to reduce the timing from 12 to 9 at least for Friday. Yes, you continue this timing from Monday. Furthermore, there are old age people living alone. How they will manage their essentials? Any plans? At least home delivery management should be made.
