INS Talwar carrying oxygen cryogenic containers from Bahrain reaches New Mangalore Port

Daijiworld Media Network – Mangaluru

Mangaluru, May 5: The Indian Navy vessel of INS Talwar, carrying 40 metric tonnes of liquid medical oxygen has reached the New Mangalore Port Trust (NMPT) port on the afternoon of May 5. The medical oxygen is donated by the government of the Kingdom of Bahrain to the Indian Red Cross Society to overcome the current pandemic situation in the country.

It is learnt that this vessel which sailed from Manama in Bahrain carrying the oxygen in two cryogenic containers (54 tonnes) has reached the city. In addition to oxygen, there is also medical equipment required for the treatment of Covid patients in the vessel.

Further, INS Airavat from Singapore and INS Kolkata from Kuwait are heading back to India with liquid oxygen, oxygen filled cylinders, cryogenic tanks and other medical equipment.

Vice admiral MS Pawar, deputy chief of Naval Staff on the progress of Operation Samudra Setu II and the arrival of the first consignment of liquid medical oxygen onboard INS Talwar at NMPT said, "As a part of the ongoing national effort to fight the Covid-19 pandemic, Indian Navy has launched Operation Samudra Setu II to bring in by sea the much-needed oxygen and associated medical supplies from friendly countries. As many as nine warships have been diverted to various ports in the region extending from Kuwait in the West to Singapore in the East."

"Last year, the Indian Navy had launched Operation Samudra Setu to repatriate our distressed citizens from IOR countries, let me assure the countrymen that the Navy will continue with its efforts to bring relief and together, we will overcome this challenge,” he said.

"Three more warships are scheduled to pick up more supplies from Kuwait and Doha. The LPD INS Jalashwa, mission deployed in South East Asia is ready to be diverted to ports in the region as the situation demands," Pawar maintained.

The union government has already instructed the NMPT to handle these containers free of cost. This oxygen is likely to be distributed to the hospitals in coastal Karnataka.

Oxygen alongwith containers may be kept in stock for use of Udupi patients as there is every possibility of rise in number of patients requiring Oxygen in the area as the disease is showing its ugly face towards Udupi not like during the earlier stage. I wonder why suddenly such requirement of Oxygen to this extent came up. With the help of our friendly nations we may be able to cope up with the present situation. Thanks to the King of Bahrain for the kindly deed of sending this life saving Oxygen.

There are some cryogenic tanks in the twin districts. The liquid can be unloaded in to these tanks and then filled in cylinders for supply of oxygen to various hospitals.

    1L/Min× 24 hrs = 1440) 40MT = 40000 Litters 40000 ÷ 1440 =28 patient. If my understanding is wrong or Math is poor. Please anyone explain.

40 tons of liquid is equal to 40000 kg multiplied by 22.414 cubic meter of gas divided by 32 molecular weight if oxygen. This is the total oxygen gas in cubic meter. Multiply this by 1000 for getting it in liters. Now if consumption per patient is 50 lit per minute multiply this with 60 for hour and further multiply with 24 for a day . Now divide the first figure by he second figure you get number of patients that can be covered by this 40 tons of liquid oxygen for a day. This is how liquid is converted into gas .

It is good to see that many countries small or big, rich or not rich coming to help India which has failed miserably due to the ignorance and arrogance of our government. We could have much better by now with a dedicated team of experts with full authority like the Army during war.

Your understanding is not correct. Indias daily oxygen requirement was less than 1000 tons per day. The highly infectious second covid wave has infected so many people, that too requiring oxygen support, has resulted in oxygen consumption more than 8000 tons per day. While country can still meet this demand from production side it is supply chain problem, especially cryogenic tankers required for transportation.

The 8000 MT of Oxygen requirement being fulfilled is after stoppage of production in the plants and industries. I am talking of sufficient oxygen to the extent that lives are not lost and is available freely. The current consumption is 8000 MT per day across the country per day, where as the requirement is much more. I assume the requirement is alone more than 20000 MT per day. Just Delhi has been getting 480-590 MT where as it's actual requirement is 900 MT. Now Karnataka is asking for 1200 MT. So when the peak arrives we should be having sufficient Oxygen and also buffer.

Is your logic applicable to other developed countries like US and Italy when the Covid struck for the first time when they were frantically looking for ventilators, medicines, beds, oxygen etc.? No country can afford to provide these things assuming everybody in the country would fall sick at once.

We must thank Bahrain for this humanitarian work, Bahrain is a small country in the middle east. Although first oil well was dug in Bahrain around 1931, they do not have any oil with them at present. Hence it is a poor country comparing to other gulf nations but people of Bahrain have big heart always.
