Have every right to know details of fund being collected by VHP: Siddaramaiah

Mysuru, Feb 20 (IANS): Karnataka Assembly's Leader of Opposition, Siddaramaiah on Saturday said that not only he but everyone has the right to demand to know how the fund collected in the name of Ram Mandir in Ayodhya is going to used.

He said they also can demand to know how much was being collected, irrespective of whether they contributed or not to the ongoing fundraising campaign launched by the Vishwa Hindu Parishad to build a grand Ram Temple in the Uttar Pradesh temple town.

Siddaramaiah told reporters: "I have no problem if one builds a Ram Temple or not. But as a citizen of this country, I have every right to demand an explanation from anyone who collects funds by launching a nationwide fund raising campaign," he said.

The Leader of Opposition said that the same VHP had collected funds from people even in the early 1990s that is when the BJP launched its Rath Yatra to oppose implementing the Mandal Commission.

"That was when Mandal vs Kamandal politics began to take shape in this country. The VHP had collected funds for building Ram Temple. That organisation has not come out with any details about its then campaign as well.

"Let them come out with information about that fund and as well as about the present day fund collection. This being a national campaign, we should not allow them to go 'unquestioned'," he said.

He countered why the BJP leaders or VHP leaders are getting upset if their conscience is clear?

"If they are free and fair in collecting funds, let them show how much they have collected, for what all purpose they used and how much is required to build the temple," he said and added that these questions are not against Ram Temple but these questions are pointed at those who are collecting funds.

"The BJP and VHP are making an all-out effort to hide these facts under the garb of Ram Temple. I have not opposed Ram Temple but I am raising questions about BJP and VHP's intentions.

"For this I do not have to be under anyone's mercy. I am a citizen of this country, I will continue to raise these fundamental questions as long as BJP and VHP play their dirty tricks," he retorted.

Answering a question, he said that he would not like to contribute to the VHP but he would rather be happy in building Ram Temple in his village -- Siddaramanahundi -- where he was born.

"Ram Temple is not an unknown thing for our rural folks. In every village or hamlet one can see Ram temple. Ram is all pervasive, so I am happy to see him in my village than elsewhere. I will build a temple here along with people's contribution. It may not be as big as their's but this is built out of pure devotion," he retorted.

Whatever else one might say of Siddu's demand of accountability, he is quite correct in seeking accountaility but not from the government which is hands-free from the collection. Siddu must demand it from the collectors as it is more than likely they will pocket a large portion of amounts and disappear. There should be a mechanism, such as an administrator or an auditor upfront, otherwise if cash is collected there is no guarantee it will be deposited in a bank. I hope the IT-sleuths will keep a close watch on this and trace - they are good at surprise raids.

N.M. Come on yaar. 1001 times? That is why , Siddu was booted out of his home constituency Chamudehswari and then had to flee to Badami to win on muslim votes, like his top party leader. He was not even given a respectable berth in the coalition and ended up as a peon of Mrs, HDK.

It is not govt owned trust to give accounts to a political party or to the state auditors. Yes, VHP has to keep the records of the amount collected and spent. This fund raising drive is for a 42 days and at the end of the drive, they will definitely publish the amounts they collected.. The donation made to Ram Mandir is tax exempted. IT dept will get to know automatically the details of the amounts contributed provided one claim the exemption under section 80G of IT act. This kind of comment is uncalled for by leaders like him unless they wants to send some kind of message to their voter base.

Are you giving tax receipt against payment of donation to add while filing taxes????????......BTW, why do you have to go door to door for collection, why can’t the people come to your local offices and donate against a receipt or why don’t you open an account in bank for people to donate digitally????????.......FYI, there is always a tax component with transparency whenever public funds are collected for govt registered and recognized institutes. Its not a private village cock fight entertainment match??????????!!!!!!!!!!!!!........

Just to oppose this man, many will say, no we dont want accountability. That is what has happened with governance, price rise, hate and cheat politics. People want to oppose Congress and their statements. These congress folks have to sit at home, do their homework and get back when people's thirst for everything is quenched. Right now, no, we want more of this version, petrol can go upto 500, we don't care as long as Congress is out of power.

Whats wrong in him asking for accountability ? Ram temple is not the private property if the VHP. The people of our country and the believers if Lord Ram have every right to know whats going on.

There is a lot of truth in his words. When collection is made ,they have to show the amount collected and who were all involved.Has to be published ,and how much was spent .Simply collect and say ,we collected from this side and mark houses.that makes people bit fear ,what might they say.Do they give receipt for the collected money? It will be interesting for the Income Tax officers.Actuelly there was no need of ,going door to door to collect.People do give for Temple .wish only to know how much are collectors get for their work ?
