Udupi: Youngsters turn garbage pile into beautiful park

Daijiworld Media Network - Udupi (SP)

Udupi, Feb 16: A place which till recently used to be covered by a heap of filth and garbage has been converted into a beautiful park, thanks to the young people from here who dreamt of such a possibility. Instead of the waste that used to cover the area that made the people nauseous, a park that attracts the visitors, has been formed in its place.

This Asare beach park has come up at Kadike in Badanidiyoor village, Malpe. The unique feature of this park is that it has been created in just ten months. During the period of Covid lockdown, the area was cleaned and a park was built there with the contribution of young people in the form of hard work. Durgamba Yuvaka Vrinda and Mahila Vrinda took the lead in transforming the site into an attractive park.

In the past, people used to bring whatever waste they had, and dispose of it off here. The villagers who ardently wanted this to stop, conceptualised the construction of a beach park here. Without seeking government's financial support, the above two organizations pooled money together and built the park. Now the organization plans to arrange for food at the site for the tourists visiting the park.

The park has been built at a cost of Rs 18 lac, and it has a 6.5 feet tall stone statue of Subhash Chandra Bose. Swing, slide, concrete hut, two huts made of coconut fronds and hay, decorative island around the park, 15 seat benches for the tourists etc have been provided. Flower plants have been planted around the park.

The young people have transformed the area in just ten months. Honorary president of Durgambika Yuvaka Vrinda, Pabhakar Tingalaya, says that a sum of Rs 18 lac contributed by the people has been spent to make this park a reality.

Readers, we in Mumbai, have a unique natural habitat, known as Mahim nature's park...This place was transformed from a ghastly dumping ground, where the filthy garbage of this mega city, was tossed in this forsaken place.. it spewed toxic fumes !!! Today this filth has resurrected into a living paradise, there are more then 18,000 trees and herbal plants, supporting a variety of birds, butterflies, flowers and rare insects... I would sincerely urge all residents of Mangaluru city, to turn their dumping grounds, into a valuable compost, which supports the entire eco system, in Dakshin Kannada district....

I hope that more youth in our coastal belt get inspired by this noble initiative and take up developmental work for the people and society than signing up t become gaurakshaks, moral police, or self-appointed love jihad vigilantes. The local authorities should also take note of this and monetarily support such causes than splurge money on inciting communal hatred and bigotry. A heartfelt thank you to Durgamibika youth group for showing this good part of us Indians still exists between all the catastrophes going on in the country right now.

That is indeed a Noble work by these youngsters. Congratulations Youngsters. May this work set an example to many more. You are an inspiration and encouraging power to other youth to think and take initiatives for the good of the society. If it had to be done by Government, it would have taken much longer and at least thrice the amount spent by you.!! Keep up the great job, Stay Safe & Stay Blessed all of you.!!

Agreed. We need to see more community involvement in such activities without looking for government help. Need to also mention without community involvement, projects such as this sometimes will end up with substandard work by the government contractors. Since the structure is very close to the sea, hope it can withstand the waves pounding during monsoon.
