Saina Triumphs at Indonesia, Wins Three Titles in Three Weeks

Jakarta, June 27 (IANS) India's Saina Nehwal capped a stupendous run winning the Indonesian Open Super Series for her third badminton title in three weeks. The World No.3 defeated a fighting Sayaki Sato of Japan 21-19, 13-21, 21-11 in the final here Sunday.

Top seeded Saina was strong favourite to defend her title after winning the Indian Open Grand Prix and the Singapore Open Super Series in the last two weeks.

Very proud of Saina's victory, say parents

Hyderabad, June 27 (IANS) "We are very proud of her. Her victory proves that women are doing well in sports in India," the elated parents of Saina Nehwal said Sunday after she won the Indonesian Open Super Series, her third win in three weeks.

"In India women are coming up, and she has shown to the entire world that yes, I can come up to those countries which are known as the hub of badminton," Saina's father Harvir Singh said, his voice choked with emotion.

Saina defeated Japan's Sayaki Sato 21-19, 13-21, 21-11 in the final held at Jakarta Sunday.

The World No.3 defended her title in Jakarta. She had earlier won the Indian Open Grand Prix and the Singapore Open Super Series in the last two weeks.

Asked if he was nervous when Saina lost the second set against Sato, Singh said: "I was nervous a bit, but we were hopeful that Saina would come back. Because in the past too, after losing she had came back strongly."

"It's a wonderful feeling and we are very proud of her," he added.

Usha Nehwal, Saina's mother, was busy answering congratulatory phone calls from friends and relatives.

"Sato was pretty fast but Saina maintained a rhythm and played good strokes. We will give her a grand welcome when she comes home," said Usha.

Saina, congratulations! don't go Sania Mirza way. Keep yourself away from lights, publicity, phto-ops, inagurations, ads, walk-the-talks etc.. Sania is now a an international standard for photo-op and 1st round exits! You can always earn money by lying low and striking high! Best wishes.. good luck for all your future tournments.

I agree with Sandesh, Mangalore, Oman. It is incorrect to compare Sania (Tennis) with Saina (Badminton). One can judge by just lifting the rackets that are used to play these two sports to understand the stamina one needs to play Tennis.

However, there is a bracket of conduct within which a public figure must remain, and display his/her affiliation. Personal matter or not, Sania has let us down first by enticing us to buy the products she endorsed (cashing in of the fame) and later by displaying un-patriotism (not advising us to take her as a role model). She has proved to be greedy and opportunist by her conduct. Difference is that Saina has not let our expectations down. Saina made me to beam with pride when she held the Tri-colour at the presentation ceremony. Sania is unfit for that glory she must not win any match else, Indians will hurt more by her mockery.

Can not compare Saina with Sania. Tennis is more popular game next to football. Also maximum number of countries with most number of players are in Tennis just like Fooball. Badminton not as popular as Tennis and played mostly in asian countries. I feel Sania is better sports woman than Saina, b'cos when she was on her top form she has won matches against now top players of International tennis. Any way remarkable achivement from Saina and hope Badminton too become internationally more popular in few years

Saina has achieved these victories through hard work, dedication and determination. These days the media, big big companies are supporting only cricket. People like Saina, Abhinav Bindra, Viswanathan Anand have brought glory to our country through sweat and blood and yet there is no publicity for them as the cricketers get. I believe Saina's achievement is much greater than what the cricketers achieved these days. Congratulations to you Saina, we are proud of you. Our prayers and best wishes are there for you.

Any Indian winning any major title is a proud moment for all Indians. However please stop comparing Saina with Sania. Each sports has its own challenges. Sania did not ask for hype or publicity. Leave Sania alone. Let her enjoy her game and her personal life.

Saina is India's shining star ! Saina Nehwal has always been my all time favourite sports star for all her achievements in so little time. Without the luxury of having any big sponsors, Saina has still managed to win numerous titles on the international front.
There is no other star in India who comes anywhere near Saina when it comes to winning at important tournaments. She is like India's tennis star Leander Paes who excels when he plays for INDIA. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said of other stars who flatter to deceive.
Saina being so young is bound to hit the top spot in her sport. She is the undisputed darling of Indian badminton and one prays and hopes that she continues in the same pattern for many more years to come.
All the best Saina. Keep winning. No one can stop you!

Congratulations for your achievements. But this is not enough. We need to be called WOrld No 1 in coming days. You have the abilitiy to do so. Please Please do that for us. We had too much hope in Anju Bobby George but she could able to climb only No 4 in her category. But she is the great by her and her husbands' work. Now please you have to dominate the Indian media by your triumphs.
