Mangaluru: International year of Plant Health, 50th anniversary of Earth Day held at St Agnes School

Mangaluru, Dec 31: The year 2020 has been declared as the International Year of Plant Health by the United Nations. The year is a lifetime opportunity to raise global awareness on how protecting plant health can end hunger, reduce poverty, protect the environment and boost economic development,

During this pandemic, St Agnes School has shown that in spite of the obstacles and hurdles, the school has proved beyond the limit the very challenges put forward. Under the valuable and superior guidance of the principal Sr Maria Gracilda AC, the teachers and students put forth various activities with regard to protection of the environment. Plants provide a core basis for life on earth and they are the single most important pillar of human nutrition. The surrounding area of the school premises was used to cultivate various vegetables and fruits like pomelo, sapota, guava, muskmelon, pumpkin, spinach, ash gourd, bottle gourd, brinjal, green chilies, snake gourd, tomato, lentils etc.



The staff enthusiastically took turns to water and nourish the plants with natural manure and the yielded organic produce was distributed generously among the staff by the principal. To enhance the beauty of the school, a variety of flowering plants were planted in pots indoor as well as outdoors.

A collage competition was organized for the students along with their parents to mark the international year of Plant Health 2020. People of all ages enjoy gardening. Teachers and students too maintained their own garden space. The children developed new skills like love of nature, physical activity, caring for plants etc. It also helped them to discover that the importance of protecting plant health is in sustaining life on earth.
