Bantwal : Religious structure comes in the way of NH widening

Mangalore, Apr 23 (The Hindu): Opposition by some local people to the shifting of a religious structure at Brahmarakutlu near B.C. Road has come in the way of the four-lane project on National Highway 48.

Sources in the National Highways Authority of India told The Hindu that the structure measured 10 m x 10 m. While the district administration has not shifted it to another place citing opposition from the local people, the NHAI maintains that it cannot widen a 700-m stretch till the structure is shifted.

“Unless the structure is shifted, the NHAI is constrained to leave the stretch as it is,” an official said. The NHAI was supposed to construct two minor bridges and a toll plaza on this 700-m stretch.

The NHAI is not in favour of a proposal given by the district administration to change the alignment and build two lanes each on either side of the structure. The administration wants to retain the structure on a wider median.

The NHAI, however, contends that such a change would render the stretch a potential accident zone, besides entailing an additional cost of over Rs. 71 lakh, the sources said.

The NHAI wants the structure to be shifted to a another place from the technical, operational, functional, contractual, safety and legal points of view, the source added.

They said that failure to remove the religious structures from public spaces was not in keeping with some recent directions of the Supreme Court. The court has asked the States to frame a policy in this regard. District in-charge Minister J. Krishna Plaemar told The Hindu that it was not proper to change the alignment of the highway at a particular stretch.

“I do not agree with the proposal to change the alignment. The work should be carried out as planned originally,” he said.

The Minister said that the State Government would cooperate with the NHAI to complete the work. “We will make all efforts to ensure that the issue is resolved.” However, the Minister declined to set a time-frame for the purpose.

People like Nagesh simply taking this column as a opportunity to blame other religions. Please stop pointing out fingers and wake up. You should go to Bantwal and see the structure place before writing something. This is my advice.

Law should be the same for everybody.
Talking about the examples, just few KMS frm this place is the Adyar Mosque which is just kissing the national highway.. Why is this mosque and its premises untouched? NHAI did not bother to look at the alignment in this specific case? Law & Rules have to be same for everone.

Nagesh, the NH has already been sliglty aligned in the 70s bcoz of the 'gudi' called structure here, not mosque or church. Now it cannot be aligned more because the curve becomes to sharp at high speeds. Just stop writing anything that comes to your mind without knowing the facts. Be reasonable.

This structure has with-held the particular stretch from completion since 2 years, & causing lot of hardship to two whealer riders as well as bigger vehicles entering the potholes at this particular place. Many are suffering back ache travelling on that stretch. People like Nagesh should be shown their place, & progress should not be hampered because of a few bigots. For these few people majority should not be made to suffer everyday, otherwise it will be like pseudo democracy like nagesh maam said.

Nagesh Nayak is the one example how the communal elements like BJP spits the venom between communities.

It is sad that such people are able to get support by stirring emotions but at the same time we are lucky that secular minded people outnumber these fanatics which is responsible in the progress of our country.

Long live the secular structure of our country!

I am glad that Mr.Palemar, our District in-charge Minister spoke very sensibly. Local issues will be sorted out with the help of localites. When outsiders poke their nose, then the smallest issue will transform in to an major controversy.
For the sake of our countries Developement we have to sacrifice our emotions. It is hard on our nature, but still we have to compromise with the existing situation.

While I am no supporter or a opposer of the Gujarath Chief Minister, Narendra Modi, I have great admiration for this man. If we closely look at the way he handled the road widing projects in his state without getting into the nitty gritty's of whose relegious structure stood in between. Its great leadership.
I dont understand why we make a hue and cry about shifting relegious structures and start blaming eachothers relegion with a development. Everyone uses the road irrespective of which relegion he or she comes from. Development work in necessary and inevitable. It is our responsibility as citizens of India that we atleast become a social motivation to development work than become a virtual thorn slowing down progress.
Remember we are fortunate to be born in India where we still enjoy a lot of rights that citizens of many countries dont enjoy. Look at countries North Korea and many others where citizens are not as lucky as us.
So let us all stop moaning!!!!

Bermer is the supreme deity of the Tuluva folk. There are hardly any temples for that deity. Infact the name Bermere kootlu comes from that temple. If someone thinks that Tuluva culture is unimportant and against development - they can go ahead and demolish the temple.

nageshanna , why u write only when religious sentiments are concerned ? i need your views where every social issues are concerned. At the end of the day country is more important than temples or churches . All these structures were built by us .We humans have built all of them..I remember countries like UAE have demolished mosques during road widening programme . Why we give so much importance to structures ? We can have a temple nearby place & it can be moved with respect. your take please As a citizen of india i expect you to write on all the issues. I hope you are educated man

    Mr Ramesh Bhat/Kumta,

Dont worry about the religious places of minorities. Demolish all religious places that comes as a hurdle to development. We need development. The earth is vast and one can build their religious places any where. No problems at all. There are lot of devotees, believers and donors for this cause. All dargahs, temples, masjids, banas, kuteeras, etc etc that lie on the pavements of roads and in public properties need to be removed permanently. These illegal structures everywhere is causing problems for the traffic and hurdle in road widening. One can see devotees, cows, bulls and of course garbage surroudning these illegal structures. When our state is developed, its developed for the citizens of this state and development is benefitted by all communties. Every one is requested to take this move in its true spirit without getting emotional and without giving it any communual tag. Jai Karnataka. Jai Hind.
