Lack of Funds with State Govt Likely to Result in More Power Cuts

Bangalore, Apr 9: Even as the two thermal power plants of Raichur Thermal Power Station that had been shut down for repairs, commenced producing power again, the government appears to be under compulsion to resort to more power cuts to manage the situation, as the demand for power has been going up steadily.

“To meet the shortage of power in the state, we have bought 200 mega watts of power from Gujarat. People should cooperate with the government by scaling down their power consumption,” requested Chief Minnister, B S Yeddyurappa, speaking at Hubli on Thursday April 8. He said that the government also hopes to mop up additional 2,000 mw of power by banning the sale of 800 mw of power privately produced in the state, to entities outside the state, and by the addition of the power generated by Udupi Power Corporation Ltd shortly. “We are paying six to seven rupees a unit for buying power. This is a very heavy load on the government. People should cooperate,” he requested.

The hydel power generation in the state has been scaled down to about 30%  of the capacity because of the dwindling level of water. Consumption of electricity has gone up by 12% as compared to last year. Raichur Thermal Power Stations is mired in one problem or the other. The sugar factories and private power generation companies have already entered into agreements for sale of power to Tamil Nadu and other states. The state recently issued orders under section 11 of Karnataka Electricity Act, barring these entities from selling power outside the state. These companies have in turn,  told the government that they have already committed for selling power to other states, and that they are not agreeable for the price of Rs 5.50 per unit offered by the government.

The state governments will require thousands of crores of rupees to buy power to meet the shortage, which it can not afford under the prevailing circumstances. Even though the Chief Minister had claimed in the legislative council that Rs 5,000 crore had been set aside for purchase of power, it is learnt that only Rs 300 crore has been provided for this purpose so far. This amount is too meagre to make any difference.

Hence, it is being analyzed that in the coming days, the load shedding hours will go up sharply till the monsoon sets in.

The voters should be garlanded with sandals for voting this inefficient people to power, who are more concerned with temples and mutts, and more concerned with communual riots. Namma grahachara.

During my last short visit, I experienced the shortage and I have put my comments here, but people like Mr Mahendra Shetty, didnt agree with me. Now Mr Yeddi is admitting what I have said. I never tell and lie and all my comments can be verified and surely ratified.

Few days back CM Mr.Yeddi declared  that Govt.'s financial possition is in sound condition. Now the same CM is crying that Govt dont have enough money to buy power. There is power cut in the evening hours which is the only time for most of the citizens to do their house work like cooking, washing cloths, cleaning etc....

At that time there is no power and Mr.Yeddy is requesting to minimise the usage of electrictiy....Its really funny. Now the question is what to minimise??????
I think instead of visiting all the temples on a daily basis CM should sit in the office atleast 6 - 8 hours a day and try to find a solution for the basic issues...this will save a lot of public money whichis spending on his tours.

Seeing the girl studying in candle light, I remember my childhood days where we used to live in village without electricity, studying under the kerosene lamp. Our government proudly patting their backs saying we will soon reach in the list of developing country. However, I don’t think that we should accept these statements. Government who should have acted proactively by taking necessary steps to meet the demand. At least during the examination time. Our CM gave a statement just yesterday that people should minimize using the electricity. What does it means, when there is no electricity which one to minimize and which one to reduce. When there is real need of electricity, it is not available, like in the evening people return back from their duty at that time there is no electricity. So just imagine the difficulties of those people, when to cook, when to do their routine. It is need of the hour to look for modern infrastructure rather than depending on the nature to give more.
On the other hand, if you see big advertisement boards on the main roads, highways and on top of buildings are fixed with halogen lamps with heavy consumption. Each board is fitted with atleast 6x200 watt lamps. Does it really required at the time of scarcity. I really don’t think there is a real need for this illumination at the cost of general public. Just imagine how much electricity can be saved. No department is taking any action against this misuse or abuse. Whom to blame?

The Govt. can raise funds through many ways like borrowing from World Bank or by floating a State Power corp. which can raise funds buy way of issuing bonds or shares. We need Power by any means, Solar, wind power or Atomic. Please do not come up with lame duck excuses. If you cannot deliver you have know business to be there. Most of the time the chief Minister spends visiting temples. At least spend 6 hours a day in the office and attend to these basic problems. Yor are solely depending on the rain water. Monsoon lasts only four months in a year.
Appoint Consultants who can help to make a stratergy to solve this shortage of power.

BJP  who always have problem with UPA will have some scratching to do with this report. 1) Promises of BJP is only for votes 2) Power production is reduced, not because of UPA but because of governance, irrespective of factors effecting it. A good governence is always proactive to manage crisis. 3) The earmarked money to buy power is a cost with which not a single MW power is created for future.

Certainly, they will leave us in dark evenafter their days in power.
