Mangalore: Burkha Row Casts Shadow Over SSLC Exams

Mangalore: Burkha Row Casts Shadow Over SSLC Exams
Daijiworld Media Network—Mangalore (RD/CN)

Mangalore, Apr 8: The Muslim community expressed anguish over the incident where teachers forced a few SSLC girl students to remove their ‘burkhas’ while appearing for public examinations.

SSLC examinations across Karnataka began on Thursday April 1. Students from various schools appeared for examinations at Ganapathi High School, Mangalore.

However, a few teachers objected to some Muslim girl students wearing the burkha when appearing for examinations on Tuesday April 6.  The ban on wearing a burkha when appearing for the examinations was not imposed by the state education department.

Although the students opposed the move by some teachers to remove their burkha, the students heeded to their demands fearing debarment from appearing in the examination.

The students reported the matter to their parents who rushed to the school and took the erring teacher to task for forcing the students to appear for the examinations without a burkha.

They alleged that the teacher had hurt the religious sentiments of both students and their parents by saying that they should follow their religion at home and threatened the students with not allowing them to appear for examination.

This unjust action of the teacher has angered the community and caused setbacks to the self-confidence of appearing students.

Education officer issues guidelines to teachers over burkha issue:

Meanwhile, the education officer clarified that the wearing of burkha is the basic right of Muslims and the examination code has no rules about appearing for an examination without wearing burkha.

The students in other districts have been found to be impersonating while appearing for examinations.  “As such cases do not exist in Dakshina Kannada (DK) district, the teachers have been advised not to restrain the students wearing burkha while appearing for SSLC examinations”, said DK district education officer Shyame Gowda to media persons.

This is nothing to do with the community. or religion. students may bring chits and they may cheat the invigilators easily if they come with burkha. well there is no need also to wear burkha in the exam hall as well. in such a hot temperature of mangalore is burkha feasible?

    Dear Lydia Madam,

why the school authorities should have to made it clear in this issue. It is very common sense yaar. No one will take photo wearing burka, at least they will show their faces. Here also same thing, they have to show their faces. It is a public exams.Only students who are not prepared well for the exams and wants to do some cheating that kind of students will do this kind of act.I appreciate the act of Teachers for this kind of action.

I Agree with your comments Lydia.. Why cant we have uniform rules for all the educational Institutions? When they are in school/colleges they have to obey the rule of those institutions. If parents are so much concerned about the burka then the education, They are free to take them away from those institutions. In these Institutions.. all students are equal and no religion/sect will play any political game there.

The problem in India is Our so called Political gurus play their cards and they fear the non support of some particular groups. I request the central board of education to form a law so that no student will feel he or she is diffeent from other in education/dress codes.

Ganapathi High School....I remember its students who had assaulted Physical Training Teacher and Principal of a Junior college during Kabaddi Match in 1978. They behaved worst than untamed animals.

Now, was it necessary for the teacher to force students to remove burkha completely ? Is it not done purposefully to hurt the sentiments of a particular community ? If the teachers themselves are trouble mongers & hatred promoters, we can not anticipate anything better from students of such school.

    Rahul,

It is not possible to make total female staff in India then the girls get deprived of being taught by some very sharp male-professors/lecturers/teachers. For example, St. Agnes is a girls college but has strict dress code. Nobody can wear revealing clothes at the same time students are not adamant of wearing Burkha. I have seen several students wear the burka at just before boarding a city bus. I feel the school functions exemplarily. Why complicate the issue ? a school for your children that allows Burkha instead of uniform ? This will enable us non-burkha wearing girls comfortable because the burkah-wearing girls think that they are stared at hence they wear the garment. What about us then ? Are we a free creatures (to be exposed) as per their opinion ?

If the teacher allowed to wear hijab or just to remove the cover of the face in order to identify the candidate's identity should be acceptable and should not be questioned & condemned. But if the teachers insist on removing complete dress of burka which is really unwanted and intolerable. If this is the case of removing complete dress of burka, then the role of parents should be appreciable. If the teacher allow to wear hijab or similar to hijab, then students & parents should cooperate as this is examination hall.

In the Middle East, there are separate schools for girls and boys. The no of male teachers in a girls school is very less as compared to the female teachers.

The female teachers are the invigilators during the exams and the girls should not wear any burkha as per my knowledge. Living and studying in Middle East, I have being told this experience from my fellow mates who are girls.

This can be an inspiration for any girl in India, since anyone can write the exam on her behalf wearing the burkha. The burkha has to be banned during examinations and female teachers can be the invigilators.

I have studied in one of the convent schools. When we had to answer our SSLC exams ,there were some catholic nuns who wore their usual sarees, and some hindu gals came with tilaks on their forehead,  and invigilator was hindu but she never questioned among them.even for muslim gals who coverrd their dupatta on their head.

But always i noticed Ganapathy highschool has problem, this isnt the first time, their community boys go to temple and cm with flowers on their ears n tilaks.  But No one raises their voice.

I request all of them please leave the burqa gals alone plz dont poke ur nose in which u dont gain anything. This is a personal issue.b4 exam begins let the teacher check all the students, while entering.

Wearing Burkha is the right of Muslim Community. Hear according to one of the student the teacher told them to remove full burkha. If they want to check the identity they can just tell them to remove the head scaff. All this issue now started in Karnataka after the communal party come into force.

Burkha has ONE real advantage. I witnesed this few days ago in Mangalore. A group of 10-12 burkha wearing ladies stormed into a cut piece corner and started enquiring about clothes and other accessories from the shop keeper and his assistants. When that guy turned around to pick the clothes from the neatly stored racks, these ladies in burkha statred flicking and stuffing inside burkha one by one many of the small items on display without the knowledge of that person. I brought this  to his notice and the answer he gave was " Sahebra hengasru haage", navu avra olage kai haki check madbahuda?. This is stupidity of burkha wearing.

The school authoroties should have made it clear in advance that students must cover themselves appropriately as Burkha will not be allowed in the exam hall. Perhaps students would have come wearing Salwar Khamees with head-scarf. All embarrassment and stress to students would have been avoided.

    Suman,

You may be knowing that in Islamic countries boys and girls are not co-educated after certain grade. Hence, question of burkha does not arise there because the teachers too are female.

We are talking about India where girls of all religions study together in co-educated schools. How can you call for burkha to be worn in a classroom where all girls are equal ? Do you agree that girls ARE gorged at by their male peers and male teachers therefore you defend burkha in a classroom ? Were you subjected to any harassment during yoru school days because you did not wear a burkha ?

In the name of burkha or face mask, the legality of idenity should not be compromised. The girls in question have to show their faces to the authorities and if the girls refuse to show their face to match that of hall tickets must not be allowed to appear for exams.

But banning the burkha or headwear is nothing but prejudice one has towards that religion. In airports, police stations, I have seen, muslim women are being asked to show their faces to match the identity they are carrying. Here no problem at all, but calling for ban ban ban is not justified. its nothing but prejudice and hate towards muslim community.

    Ayoub,

If I say choose between your tradition or education, would you give up education ? In a class room all students are equal - if those wearing a burkha are modest, what about others ? Are they butterflies ? Let the school impose their rules in their territory - you impose yours in your home and in the society you move about. There are schools that adhere to Burkha as a uniform - people are free to send their daughters there.

Dear guys, muslim women have not started writing exams after the BJP govt formed in karnataka. Muslim women have been writing exams ever since British Raj. All these days there were no problems and all of a sudden why this problem? Its all stage managed. Now one knows whose govt is secular and who is anti muslims.

If every one is talking about burkah, I also call upon swamis to shed off saffron dhoti and wear pant and shirt. As saffron dhoti is the right/previlige of swamis, same way burkha is right/previlige of muslim women. Those who want to war burkha must be allowed and those muslim women dont want to wear burkha, it must not be forced on her. But the teacher in question must be punished for bringing communual issues for no reason. The communual agenda of the ruling govt will not last long and people may have to keep quiet to live in peace and harmony.

Burkha should be strictly banned from Public places since public places are increasingly operating on identity of the individuals on all counts. Individual is identified by the face whether in passport, voter's id card, bank pass books, PAN card and security systems at Air ports, railways, bus stations. The criminals and fraudsters can take advantage if burqa is allowed. Imagine a man in a burqa sitting near your sister in the bus or train's lady compartment. Or in lady's toilets etc., etc., Ban the burqa from the public space.

There is a reason why these students are asked to remove the burkha. It is not to hurt their religious sentiments but it is to make sure the right student is on the bench to give exam. There was no such issues in the past when the majority of the community was uneducated but now when the percentage of educated one are increasing issues are increasing and are linked with religion.

Perhaps this could be the same with all other religion where bajrangadal and rama sena increases their membership with educated ones. Christian organisations are also with similar attitude. Poor are those to monitor the exam hall for compliance.
