Sania Should Follow Tradition, Play for Pak after Marriage: PTF Chief

KARACHI, Apr 1 (PTI): Pakistan Tennis Federation chief Dilawar Abbas wants Sania Mirza to play for Pakistan after her marriage with former cricket captain Shoaib Malik later this month.

Sania intends to continue playing for India even after tying the knot with Shoaib on April 15 in Hyderabad but Abbas said she should give playing for Pakistan a thought.

"It is great news for our tennis community that Sania Mirza is getting married to Shoaib Malik. We welcome her and hope that she would become a Pakistani national and play for us in future. She has a great future ahead and we would be delighted if she plays for Pakistan," Abbas told 'The News'.

"Asian women traditionally follow their husbands which is why I'm hopeful that someday she would be inspired by Shoaib to play for Pakistan," he added.

The 23-year-old Sania, who is the most successful woman tennis player from the sub-continent, will settle down with Shoaib in Dubai post marriage.

Abbas said even if she decides to continue playing for India, Sania can still help her husband's country by promoting the game among women here.

"She can encourage our girls to take up tennis, she can inspire them to become world class players," he said.

"We would hope that Sania would lend a helping hand to women's tennis in Pakistan," he added.

Abbas suggested that Sania team up with Pakistan's number one tennis player Aisam-ul-Haq Qureshi in the mixed doubles circuit.

"Both Sania and Aisam are really good doubles players. I believe that their team would not just achieve great results internationally but will also help bridge the gap between India and Pakistan," he said.

      Cool down Racheal Rego,

First of all, nobody threw MF Hussain out of India, he himself left the country our of fear for angering Indians like me who would not at any time depicting Bharat Mata Nude. Its upto you to forgive him but I don't think all will forget what he did. Now have you seen the legend that you hold at such an esteem has accepted the citizenship of an Islamic country ! What was his need to do that ? Did Bharat Maata stop him from returning ?

Secondly, Sania the brave girl who fought the fanatics who criticized her shorts is surrendering to a man from a country where women are gang-raped for family enmity or male ego (example Mukhtar Mai). Moreover, the very country asks Sania to represent a country where people do not allow women to leave house without a Burkha. As a woman, you think yourself - is the journey Sania makes towards progress or degrading, living the liberty she earned or imprisoning herself ? Nobody is interfering with her privacy but what example is she setting for me or you ?

Indians have always been double sided swords to its shining stars. They have not even given a second though before any of their important decisions. For Eg. Mr. Hussain: he brought India in the cultural & art map of the world! and Indians threw him out of their hearts just for a mistake he did before 30 years!! Now its time! the Indians will not even spare the shining star Sania someone commented that she is no longer playing a quality game - and we don't need here! if ur mother says that u are of mo longer importance to her and plans to leave u ! what will be ur response?? Indians never seem to remember the old glorious victories and happiness that these people bestowed upon the country. Really Sad!
Why cant Sania marry Sohaib? Isn't he a human! The world is divided by religion and countries! but if we think in a positive way everything is possible! Indians and Pakistanis we all are brothers and sisters. our fore-fathers were in harmony.... time is changing .. its time for u all to change ur narrow minded thinking... they are just asking Sania to support their women in the field of tennnis! and joining the Pakistan team? its her choice! the shivasenis have already thereatened her to stop playing for India if she marries Sohiab! So sania when Indians are no longer interested in helpining u and understanding u.. its i good u become a citizen of Pakistan and atleast bring name to our neighbours! All the best...

Sudhir, your comparaision with Sania & Sonia is to cheap, Sonia is a iron lady who is doing good for our country, Sania is big enough to know she is doing who are we to judge Sania or Sonia. Leave the ladies alone & see your own daughters & sisters whom they are marrying. Why is every one make an issue of Sania's marriage, when the families wish to be united, politic parties & we are no one to judge her & make decsisions for her. She is old enough to know what she is doing.Leave the lady to her own privacy, & if you wish to send her your blessings fine or just let it them live they life. She has not asked her fans or anyone's opinion. God Bless her & her married life. All the best for your married life.

Sania better quit tennis and try become good "gharwali" a good wife and a mother. Anyway her tennis ranking is slipped down to 92. What we expect from her in future, nothing but humiliation for both India and PAK if she continues play for either one.

Even if she plays for Pak, it's not a big loss in terms of Tennis India. Her game is not of any international quality anymore and i don't think she can ever make it with the weak serve and lack of fitness.

It's her life and her choice and none of us have any claim on it. My gut feeling is Sania have done everything right in her life to achive her present glory except her ion of life partner. I am afraid she is heading into problem of every time.. Religious Fanatism from Pak/ Afghanistan, diplomatic problems, fan emotions when she loses matches. she may lose her endrosements if Indo/Pak relation goes wrong any further (may be another attack by terrorist). The Indian corporates goes truly on public sentiments.
      It is purly my opinion.

Well, Sudhir & people like u what sania & Sonia have in common-only the letter S, there ends the similarities. Sania is not marrying Bhuttos son(the clout of political party) to be eligible to contest for an election. She is marrying a sportsman & only sport can she give phillip to in that country. As politics & sports are two poles apart. U are questioning the people of India who have supported, or who have the right to decide who they prefer to be their PM or President. If u don't want Sonia then don't vote for her party it is as simple as that.Don't assume u have been given the power of attorney by all Indians to comment on their behalf.

      Sudhir,

You are lucky to be a man that you have women to support you in your every step. Women dutifully accept their husband's family name after marriage - never other way round. This applies to all human species, including Sania and Sonia. Don't exaggerate - Sonia supported the party of her husband's family - never tried to be PM or President.

Nevertheless, its foolish to compare because India's relationship with Italy and Pakistan is far too different.

If tommorrow she becomes Pak citizen, will pakis make her president or prime minister of Pakistan, no never. But all who talks about Sania Mirza will support Sonia to become to PM or President, how funny our gr8 Indians are.

Today, Sania is a Star. Every comentator has his own view on her as if she is their personal possession. How much did our govt. or any individual help her to reach to this stage ? It is her hard work which have given her the fame. Doesn't she has the freedom to marry a person of her choice ? Doesn't she has freedom to settle down in her life ? Suppose she say good bye to tennis can India or Pakistan compel her to play again ? Leave the poor soul alone and let her decide her fate. Good luck Sania..have a happy married life with couple of cute kids.

As long as Sania retains Indian nationality, she must continue to play for India. Once she surrenders her Indian nationlality and becomes Pak citizen, we have no control on her. But Mr Asif Zardari, please note that she shall not play for your country as long as she is Indian. Once she becomes Paki, we have to forget her forever.

      John Vas,

Yes ! She should be given time till she gets married (and.. of-course having a few children) and then packed off to India like Imran Khan did to Jemima. We all know that as long as Jemima maintained the surname KHAN, the children are with her. The moment she marries somebody else, Imran will capture the children and fly to Pak. Sania's life will be no different than that of Jemima.
