Mangalore, Jan 16:  Prizes were given away to the winners of the short story, poetry, and group singing competitions organized by Konkani Kutam Bahrain, as part of its decennial celebrations, in a valedictory function held at Kalangan in Shakthinagar on Saturday January 16.

The awards were distributed by guest of the programme Fr Walter D’Mello, parish priest of Milagres Church, Eric Ozario, Gurkar of Mandd Sobhann, Ronald Gomes, president of Rachana, and Machacha Milar, president of Karnataka Konkani Writers’ Association.

Speaking on the occasion, Fr D’Mello said that the organizations formed outside India are making a wonderful contribution to the mother tongue and Konkani culture. He said that such support and work should continue to help the growth of culture and language.

Ronald Gomes said that most of the people, after a stage, talk in other languages and sometimes feel shy to speak their mother tongue. “But the efforts of organizations formed in the Gulf and the Middle East, like Konkani Kutam, are making people remember their language and culture”, he added.

Judges of the competitions were honoured during the programme.

Local organizer of the association Titus Norohna conducted the programme and convener Richard Moras welcomed all. Writer Lloyd Rego proposed the vote of thanks.

In each group, the first prize was Rs 10,000 and second prize was Rs 5,000.

A musical programme by Melvyn Peris and team was held after the award distribution. Jerry Rasquinha and his team performed jokes and skits.
