Mangalore, Dec 30:  Two children were killed and three injured when a private bus in a reverse gear mowed down members sleeping in a tent near entrance arch enroute Polali at Gurupura Kaikamba under Bajpe police station limits early morning on Wednesday December 30.

The deceased children have been identified as Prajwal (4) and Bhavani (2). Laxmi ((32) a pregnant woman, Manju (68) and Saroja (60) are the three injured. They were originally residents of Trasi near Kundapur in Udupi district and engaged in bucket repair works.

The tent was put up in a sloppy area on Tuesday December 29, informed the people in the vicinity. The driver of the bus had parked the vehicle last night and started the vehicle in the morning for a daily trip. It is said that the driver was unaware of the tent being put up and it is suspected that the driver must have lost control while on a reverse gear as the area was sloppy.

The bus was damaged by the people gathered on the spot in a fit of rage. The bus is in the custody of police. Bajpe police as a measure to control the situation has deployed a team of Karnataka State Reserve Police on the spot.

Considering the deaths of the passengers & pedestrains in Mangalore, caused by buses and trucks in last couple months, and its aftermath No actions, being taken, I am of the firm belief, that, the blame lies not on the killer drivers, nor the owners of these vehicles, but entirely on the people of Mangalore, who do not have the backbone to stand up and say enough is enough, instead they act in a way as if none of these accidents are of any matter then as long as their work is done.

I have seen passengers in a bus supporting the driver when one passenger from asked the diver not to speed. Yes as some one remarked, it is true, we Mangaloreans are good only to pass comments, but scared to take any actions

I have read with certain amount of sadness the untimely death of innocent children. I do not hold the brief for drivers - far from it. However in the context of the cause of the accident it is expedient that in the first place our corporation or panchayats should ensue that all norms of temporary tents are strictly adhered to. Did the dwellers of the tent under reference have an authority to put up a shelter by the road side? Do the authorities have a right to relocate hutment dwellers to a safe place? The rive is guilty of rash and negligent driving but at the same time

The Government should own responsibility for for the death of the victims. I am seasoned driver having driven in India for nearly seven decades and in the United States for three decades but I must admit that I am fortunate if I return home every day without an accident. Such is the condition of the roads. With regard to traffic offenses, I I feel that these can be reduced considerably by inviting the public for their considered opinions and seeking the help of the civilians to help the department of law and order. My services are at the disposal of The Law Enforcement authorities who are liberty to summon any time for my practical advice. Joe Gonsalves

I don't support bus drivers or the victims in this matter. The fault is from both the ends. if you built a tent on the road side what do u expect...? first think municipality should not allow anyone to build tents on the roadsides. its creates problem for both the road users and the person in the tents. Road side areas are not for building any tents.

It could not be any worse. Mangalore roads are now graveyards / killing fields. How many more innocent people will fall victims to these rash drivers only time will tell. While the drivers drive with impunity, the law enforcers look the other way. The same bus the same drivers are back again. On the other hand our readers endlessly offer sympathies, "very shocking", "very sad", "may their soul rest in peace" and so on and on. The frequency with which innocent people are falling under the wheels, I think the time has come to erect a memorial in their memory. What miseries has this "development" brought to the Mangaloreans.

It is high time all the private buses are stopped from operating and KSRTC start City Bus Service. City Bus Service should have short bodied and long bodied buses of high statdard. Long bodied buses till the outer ring of the city and the short bodied buses inside the city.

See the poor labourer parents - Did they come this far to get their children killed ? Well, there is nothing anybody can do to bring back their children. They will, like any of us, go on with their life. However, the one who caused this accident should not be let go free just because the victims' family is poor. The bus owners may have made enough money, may have insured their staff and vehicles. Let them compensate this family at-least on the account of their dead children their economic status will improve. May the little souls rest in peace.
