Daijiworld Media Network - Mangalore (RS/SB)

Mangalore, Dec 28: In a tragic incident, a woman and her six-year-old child had to pay the price with their lives in the accident that occurred due to the negligence of a  bus driver at Nantoor here on Monday December 28.

The deceased have been identified as Shalet Mary (26) and her daughter Jasmine (6), residents of Preetinagar near Shaktinagar in the outskirts. The accident occurred when a speeding bus moving in the same direction ran over Shalet, who was riding a two-wheeler with her child on the pillion. She was returning home after visiting hospital, it is learnt.

Shalet, who sustained  serious injuries on the head died on the spot and the child succumbed to her injuries at a private hospital. It is learnt that the deceased woman was working in a private business centre and her child was studying in upper kindergarten at a private institution near Nantoor.

Vinita Lobo/Jeppu - Do not blow your trumpet. I am not a religious person and do not like to bring religion in this episode. As for business world especially on transportation you may take healthy lessons from me. Before you point out fingers at your staff do your own assesment as to how good you are. Try to take responsibility at every level do not run away and be a COWARD. Act and implement discipline from day one, do not make judgement on others. I dont think any bus owner in Mangalore can start transportation business in clean environment - corruption is the name of the game - you may be an exception. The staff help you earn your bread-and-butter, learn to respect them. No one needs your advise that the guilty should be punished everyone knows that. The only sinsible person existing on earth Ms. Vinita - please stop preaching and start practicing good values.

My deeply condolence to the family of Shalet and Jasmine. I totally agree with Vinita Lobo its not the owners are blamed for this its the drivers are responsible for this.Drivers in Mangalore halt a long time in one bus stand in Tulu we call has Pajje and then try to make up the timing by rash driving. Has in govt buses there are speed breakers to check, RTO should introduce the speed breakers to private buses also to avoid such accident.

My deep condolences to the bereaved family. Mangalore City Corporation is responsible to this incident. The main reason for this incident is Manhole which is built without any common technical idea (because any vehicle passes through this manhole jumps suddenly and makes driver to lose control) also this place is very dangerous (u turn). We informed several times to city corporation about this, but no reply or any action. Now is the time to take action not only against the driver also to the Mangalore City Corporation.

Sincere condolences to the family of the deceased. Lives cut short due to human negligence and the "I don't care" attitude. Stop the blame game, take collective responsiblility, and find solutions. Patience with bus drivers and conductors in Mangalore and those taking passengers to and fro Udupi and Manipal seems to be running out. Watch out guys lest you be lynched. Remember the incident when Bus route no. 19 was set ablaze following the deaths of two children near Besant school several years ago.The owners are morally responsible for the actions of their employees. Let us learn to respect the value of another human being, and this world will be a better place to live in.

Mr Roland Noronha & Mr Joel Sydney you need to know the fact before u talk don't advise me on what has to be done U r telling to walk on the ground & all that rubbish keep it for yourself.I'm not going against the teachings of Jesus Christ. Jesus Christ never teaches you to take revenge on someone he teaches you to Forgive. It is their FATE that has taken away the lives of the mother & child. I have lived in Mangalore ,& in Dubai I know very clearly on what I write .U don't need to teach me on what has to be written or how I need to live on earth.Rather pray for the departed souls of Shalet & Jasmine.

Mr Roland Noronha & Mr Joel Sydney Has the owner asked the driver to drive recklessly & kill someone?? Punish the driver. Guilty should be punished.

Dont comment on anything & everything that makes no sense. Mr Joel Sydney u say at the end of the month it is to the owners pocket of course "YES" as the owner has invested in for the same,it is not as u get paid at the end of the month, whatever is collected needs to be paid for TAX ,FUEL, Maintenance it is not that everything earned is saved. Mind your Language you both before you comment .Dont preach on the bible or the Teachings of Jesus to me , I very well know & can also tell u the verse & chapter on the teachings Bible.

Hurry! in tulu language. i understood and i stood firmely in the last step of hte busy and asked the bus driver if he has any appointment or whether he has to reach on specified time to reach to his final destination. The driver and conductor didnt uttered a word. I even warned all the passengers who were travelling in that bus get down at their convineant time but not in Hurry. i feel all these government busses service must be stopped and start Government bus service like in Mumbai.

In the last week,I had this opportunity to travel in an Express bus from Mulki to Mangalore .The way this driver was driving ...he had no regard for oncoming traffic, for small vehicles and even other buses...he also had no driving sense ...the way he was changing gears ...I was sitting just behind him in the first row...and when i turned back ...all I could see was terrified faces!!!...but no one bothers to say anything ...I couldnt take it anymore and just told teh driver to stop in the side and gave him one tight slap and also told him as to why did i slap him ...before the conductor and teh cleaner could come to hit me i got down from the bus and crossed the road. Its time people take responsibility for ensuring safety rather than complain like everyone here has done about blaming the driver of rash driving. If all of us start doing this, the drivers will drive buses the way they are meant to be .

I have a simple solution to this never ending problem. You need guts to do it and I'm sure no one in Mangalore have them. Get hold of all such reckless Driver's and kill him on the spot. I'm sure, everyone will drive safe and ensure that everyone is safe on our roads. I once travelled from Mangalore to Udupi on an Express bus and I remember the bus I travelled having a tiff with a competitor, to overtake each other. I went up to the Driver and just casually told him that if anything happens to me, whilst you play games, you will never ever drive again in your life. The Driver came back to his senses and drove sensibly later on. It's high time Manglorean's, Jaago !

I've been reading through all these comments written up here. Shalet was my classmate. We went to the same church, attended the same catechism classes and received our first holy communion together. Its true that death does not spare anyone. But the way death came on her is definitely something i will not be able to digest for a long time.

She did not deserve it this way. But i guess it was better than living a painful life if she ever survived her fatal injuries. May be she would have been bed-ridden and it would have been worse. Folks, before you comment on the drivers and the government and the rules and the regulations - please pray for her and her innocent kid's soul. To lose a wife, and to lose a child is one thing and for us to comment on punishing the guilty is another.

All we can do is pray for the one who was responsible for the fatality of the accident. Let the final judgment rest with God.I do understand the frustration that all of us go through every time we see a young life blown away owing to negligence and carelessness. Recalling the past no.of accidents reported here and the lives lost, i feel its high time we all came together for a cause. If someone can think of some way to bring about strict traffic norms and more importantly on driving licenses for heavy vehicles, guess it would be a job well begun. Please do pray for the soul of Shalet and her baby. And morally support the family at this hour. Eternal Rest grant them Lord.May their soul rest in peace.

Heartfelt condolences to the victim family. This problem of reckless speeding by city bus drivers has been there for a very long time as far as I can remember. Countless lives have been lost. The solution, in my opinion, is in strict enforcement of commercial licensing standards by RTO and enforcement of speed limits within the city and hefty fines for breaking the law. Driving on public roads is a privilege and not a right! DC Ponnuraj has been doing some great work for the city of Mangalore. Hopefully, he can institute strict enforcement of traffic rules with RTO and Traffic Police.

This is due to poor trafic system in Udupi / Mangalore. No Bus drives follows rules. It is scarry to travel in those roads. This is only due to support of Trafic dept.( monthly ? ) to Bus owners, they dare to drive rash / brake rules. I have challenged some of the Express drivers ( inside udupi )and made them to take riverse ( I enjoy doing when I am on vacation )when they overtake wrongly ( they take 75% of road in some of the pick up spot ). I love doing it for those ? drivers. This is also due to our own people. They close their eyes when this is happening. Its pain to see the way Buses are going in our highway. These type of accident bound to happen.

This sad occurrence is not the first time, and is certainly not going to be the last time. Having been to Mangalore after many years and seeing the changes in the landscape, population demographics and how reckless people are on the roads these accidents are inevitable. People use their automobiles as missiles rather than objects of transportation. You cannot fix a problem if you feel that nothing is wrong, or worse shift the blame onto someone else. If there is a genuine desire for change it should start with a town hall meeting between all representative groups, citizens and city officials on what needs to be done by all using the road. Unless there is active participation of all citizens and government departments on safety issues i.e

    a) What are the problems

    b) How to fix it.

    c) Implement and enforce that decision. If not, I sadly feel that everyone is offering only lip service only and then they all continue to use the road in the same way they were doing before, ”Business as usual”

Vinita/Jeppu/Dubai - Whom you are trying to impress by saying that you are a owner of busses and raising a question on transportation? Looking at Dubai you are asking to install radar otherwise, I doubt whether you knew what is a radar. We are all educated people and seen half of the world so accept the situation gracefully. If your staff is wrong the responsibility has to be shared by his superior/manager and/or owner by way of compensation. Well staff definitely get punished for his wrong doing. Your knowledge on law of the land is very poor.

Your are contradicting teachings of Jesus by sending such hard message. I am sending this message so that you understand things by sitting on the otherside of the table (A Poor/Common Person's place). Never walk one feet above the ground - Take my advice - be humble - do not follow the money -let the money follow you - this will happen when you are down to earth. Jesus knows when to apply brake on a person when he or she crosses limits. Let us unite in praying for the reposed soul of Shalet and jasmine - God Loved them and his ways are different to reach at them. Sorry if I have pained you with this message - I have no such intentions but to make you realise that we all are human and need to show that we are concerned about our fellow citizens.

I do expect a hard reply from you if so, a hard reply await you so that you know to whom you are communitacting with.

WAke up you Ministers and Police. Don,t just feed your tummies and do nothing. How the hell you can see the young lives paying a price for your inefficiency?? What will happen if this happens to you?? Why can't you have a corporation in line with BEST in Mumbai?? If you dont know, go and take some training, Please, enough is enough. Lets do something to make people's life safe. Also please fine heavily to the driver as well as the owners of the Bus and with rigerous punishment, so that others dont repeat this.

Its high time Traffic authorities take very strict measures like enforcing speed limits and use of speed governors.Drivers of all public vehicles need refresher course in safety driving. And this spot is very very accident prone and should be d a accident zone and should be manned by traffic cops.

Definitely we do require decipline in driving. As the roads are so narrow it's not at all possible for the speeding vehical to overtake. Road rules are not at all observed. Buses halt on the roads stopping the flow of trafic. Especially Express bus drivers have no patience at all, it's realy scary to sit in the front seats while travelling. Many a time you may see the truck cleners take charge while the drivers are having a nap. At the end the innocent public has to pay the price for all these. It's really sad, but it's happening all most every day on NH17. The road condition i so bad & for the last so many years we are just hearing it's going to be 4 lane... 6 lane ...BUT WHEN???????????

Unlimited issuance of Bus permits, competition, with target to the drivers to reach at the stipulated time, over loading of passengers etc so many things to be regulated...All correct. However I would like to draw the attention to another..This particular lady having to work for 8 hours in the office..can she again take burden of taking her child to the Hospital ?What her husband was doing ?If he is away earning livelihood for her family, then lady should be at home taking care of her child... Is it not the duty of a man to take care of the wife 7 child... Here i will blame the selfish 'Men" who expects his wife to bring money which is primarily the men's responsibily !!

Mr Joel Sydney. Do u actually know running a transport business? Do u know what is the salary a driver & a conductor is paid & apart from that what is the margin commission they keep for themselves , I being the owner of buses know what we owners are undergoing .Just don't sit in front of the computer & comment anything rubbish ,agreed that there are too many buses on route & there is competition but it does not mean the owner is at fault . Has the owner asked the driver to drive recklessly & kill someone?? Punish the driver. Guilty should be punished.Introduce "RADAR" system as we have it in GCC's and make the driver & conductor on duty to pay the speeding fine .Then you can see the difference . Kindly dont comment anything & everything that makes no sense. May the departed souls rest in peace.May lord Jesus grant the courage to bear this loss.

Public will beat truckdriver If automan(by mistake) headon to a truck . Secondly people are hurry in the morning in ping the child & to attend office within stipulated time. two wheelers are riding on their own will & wish . If they would have any strict action, defenetly all the drivers drive with some sense. Next thing what I observed in Magalore is when any woman/girl driving any /4 wheelers with L board, everyone tries to make her nervous or make her to afraid by blowing horn. This attitude has to be changed. Just before you blow horn think about yourself how you had learnt driving or if it is your sister/wife/mother will you do the same?
