Cricket : Lalit Modi's IPL commissioner's Post in Danger

PTI

NEW DELHI, Dec 13: A week after his bid to regain control of the Rajasthan Cricket Association failed in an acrimonious election, Lalit Modi now faces a fresh crisis with a very powerful lobby within the BCCI plotting to remove him from the IPL commissioner's post.

Modi, who has successfully conducted two editions of the Indian Premier League and filled the BCCI coffers with his marketing acumen, has been having problems with some of the key BCCI functionaries for some time now.

According to sources in the know of the development, the move to remove Modi as the IPL Commissioner and Chairman has been gaining momentum within the board.

"There is a move within the BCCI to remove Modi as IPL chairman and commissioner. The argument is that the IPL is a BCCI event and logically the BCCI president should head it as an ex officio member.

"It does not mean that Modi will have no role at all in the running of the IPL but it is only that he should not be heading the show," the source disclosed.

Although no BCCI official was willing to go on record on this development, it is learnt that BCCI secretary N Srinivasan, known to be at loggerheads with Modi, is in the forefront of this campaign.

The move has not yet come up for formal discussion in working committee meetings but is being pursued privately to garner support.

"These things are not discussed in working committee meetings where only items listed in the agenda are taken up for deliberation. But yes, behind the scene, it is discussed," the source said.

Modi, who was given virtually a free hand to run IPL, his brainchild event, during Sharad Pawar's tenure as the BCCI president, has not enjoyed the same status after Shashank Manohar took over.

Attempts to clip Modi's wings started from the second edition of the IPL, which was staged in South Africa because of the general elections in India.

The first such attempt was made when the BCCI decided to terminate the contract of IMG as the event manager for IPL.

Modi, however, got seven of the eight franchises to rally behind him and wrote letters to the BCCI questioning the merit of the decision. The only franchise which did not send such a letter was Chennai Super Kings, co-owned by Srinivasan.

Pawar himself was critical of the decision and it was a letter from him that tilted the scale in Modi's favour and BCCI subsequently renegotiated the deal with IMG in which the event management company's fee was reduced from Rs 33 crore to Rs 27 crore.

Meanwhile Modi, aware of the changing equation within the BCCI top brass, is learnt to have extended the olive branch to his one time nemesis Jagmohan Dalmiya.

Modi had recently been to Kolkata, ostensibly to oversee the renovation work at the Eden Gardens, and had a one-to-one chat with Dalmiya for close to one hour and Cricket Association of Bengal sources gave enough indications that a rapprochement between the two was a possibility.

The third edition of IPL will be held in March-April next year and the auctioning process has already started.

Modi has grand plans for future editions of the IPL and has also announced that the number of teams would be increased to 10 from 2011.

Sad but true. Those who toil day and night for the welfare of the association and when that entity runs smoothly then many father's will strive to gain the position and momentum glory for their selfish ends. They give damn to the sacrifice rendered by the successful leaders. This fact is true and won't be surprised if Lalit Modi will be forced to relinquish his chair unceremoniously. After all we are living in a evil selfish world. Mr. Lalit Modi are best wishes are with you.

First of all this IPL is a farce. Played only to make money and not promote cricketing talent. Wat have film stars and businessmen got to do with cricket than earn money. Ask Shilpa Kundra whats LBW she would definetely say love Before Wedding. IPL has done nothing for us to be no.1 team in tests. Lets get serious with test cricket.

The sooner this guy is shown the door, the better it is for Indian cricket. His greed for money has destroyed the game and reduced it to a farce. We hardly play any test cricket, but waste our time watching pyjama cricket called T20, and it is all because of him. Secondly he tried to be oversmart and began meddling in politics, which is why his own board Rajasthan has thrown him out. Once upon a time he was Dalmiya's bitterest foe, but now to save his chair he is running behind Dalmiya.

Lalit Modi is in danger...It is good for cricket. This nonsense T20 is killing Test Cricket.Today,India is No 1 in Test rankings. That is mainly because of glorious service of Tendulkar,Dravid,Laxman,Sehwag,Harbajan. At the same time we should not forget Kapil,Gavaskar,Kumble who made Indians proud. If madness of T20 continues ,then we can not produce players like classy Dravid,Sachin,Laxman. Thats why great spinner Bedi said "Test crikcet is like Safari suit and One days are like Pyjama !! I think if he is asked about T20,he will reply that it is nothing but Underwear . For the sake of Test cricket, I advice T20 should be banned. T20 MEANS MONEY AND NOT CRICKET.
