M'lore: AC Leads Demolition Drive against Guest Houses on Someshwar Sea Shore

Mangalore, Nov 5: Dakshina Kannada district administration after initially targeting the roadside petty shops and tiny structures for demolition, has taken on bigger buildings.


 

The demolition team equipped with three backhoes is headed by assistant commissioner Prabhulinga Kavalikatti, the construction on illegal encroachment of government land began at around 6.30 am on Thursday November 5 at Someshwar sea shore in the city outskirts. In a daylong drive as the first demolished building, a guest house of a person residing in Mumbai in Battapady here and maintained by a local caretaker has been demolished. The land was encroached about 20 years ago and the construction came up during early 2000s.

However, locals protested stating that demolition drive is beign undertaken without the prior notice. Tight police security has been provided and Panambur deputy superintendent of police Girish was on the spot. Home guards too have been posted to quell any resistance.

Speaking to reporters, Kavalikatti said that a total of 100 acres of land in the area has been encroached in violation of Coastal Regulatory Zone (CRZ) Notifications 1991. He said that since 2003 notices has been served for over 15 times to clear the encroached land with last one being served about two months ago. However, as the notices remained unanswered, the demolition drive has been undertaken, he said. In all 14 illegal constructions have come up, among which occupants of the three buildings have moved high court and secured a stay against demolition.

Tahsildar Ravichandra too was present at the spot.

    Good Job By the D.C. against all the illegal constructions at public places. But here I would like to point out my opinion. While demolishing all those posh buildings, they could have atleast spared the wooden door frames, window frames and any other re-usable wooden materials and other fittings and the same could have auctioned or used in the construction of the houses of poor flood hit victims. Also I have a question here, what they are going to do with the demolition debris, especially the stone, cement plaster debris and the broken marble & granite tile pieces & other materials? I think they will leave them as it is in the places of demolition for years!! These things cant be re-used at all. Otherwise the authorities will dump these debris in some other public places. In my opinion instead of demolishing, the govt. should have taken possession of these buildings and used it for some other purposes. ? Also the authorities involved in constructing these illegal buildings should be punished heavily.

    Mr Ronald,I have raised this issue with local authority sometime back while construction was on. None gave proper answer. Good that you have raised the issue in Media channel. let us see what answer comes. I hope AC and DC will not perform on the basis of pick and choose. More illegal structures should go from inside City Limit of Mangalore. There is a college office operates in Illegal building next to Janatha Bazar in Hampankatta. Then these colleges expect students to follow the Rule of Law.

    Good Job Against all the odds of CRZ regulation, there is a engineering college in Adyar voilating all rules and regulation. Does AC or DC has Gutts to demolish them??

    DC Ponnuraj has been very partial here. He has targeted the poor and the least poweful people on the Someshwar coast.If he wants to show his REAL POWER OF LAW, let him bring down the structure of RNS Residency at Murudeshwar which is built in the water and given rise to some of the deadly water borne viruses. If he accomplishes this, then he deserves credibility by all means. The DC definitely has not done a great job by demolishing the constructions of residents in Someshwar.

    This is purely not a justice to demolish the houses in the beach. there are so many other factors which has to be looked into like- the condition of mangalore roads,etc. Those houses are not harmful for any one but only thing they have built without proper records.

    Mr. Raymond D'Souza, you are correct in one way. There is a difference between encroachment and building with permission. Murdeshwar Guest House and Murdeshwar is now visitor's spot in Karnataka because of efforts of Mr. R. N. Shetty. Govt did nothing there or in other places of tourist Interest. Do you feel demolishing those constructions at Murdeshwar... suppose you are made as DC there ? Then you will become a new Ghazni or Ghauri Mohammad of India

    Congratulatios to the DC of Mangalore. Did any body noticed that building was illegal at the time of construction stage? If yes why nobody was taken any action and how they allowed to construct such a big building? (specialy local Authority) Sir, Identify who are involved in such illeagal work and Demolish them before demolishing the building.

    Great work done..........The illegally enroached houses and guest houses are gone once and for all...Hardly there was any free land left for the beach goers to enjoy a peaceful evening in the beach side,because all the shore was blocked by these illegal guest houses and its huge compound walls....Great effort by the authorities.......keep up the gooD work

    It is stated that the construction was done in 2000, where were the authorities then? I dont feel that demolishing of already built guest house is a wise idea. Instead govt. should have taken possession of it as it is built on encroached land and use it for some useful purpose. This chap must be not very powerful one, can the govt think of demolishing the Murudeshwar guest house which is touching the sea waters. Does it not come under CRZ.

    Congrats for the great work well done. Similarly, there should be a demolition drive on illegal temple/mosque/church on the govt. encroached land. Religion is pure & can practice inside the four walls of our homes. Praying to God in an illegally constructed structure is meaningless and it is a betrayal to the honesty & purity of God.
