Mangalore, Aug 10: In what can be termed a hilarious case of mistaken identity, Congress party workers ended up felicitating state home minister Dr V S Acharya instead of their leader and union minister for law M Veerappa Moily, on Monday August 10.

The incident took place at Thokkottu Circle near Ullal where Congress activists were waiting with garlands and firecrackers to extend a rousing welcome to Moily who was on his maiden visit to the district after being inducted into the union cabinet.

No sooner did they see the convoy of vehicles, complete with a police escort, revolving red beacon, and blaring siren, than they began bursting the firecrackers.

Seeing this, the police escort and the convoy stopped there. One of the waiting Congress leaders approached the convoy and to his shock found Dr Acharya instead of Moily!

Without the slightest hint of embarrassment at such a major gaffe, the Congress leader, MLA U T Khader went ahead and felicitated him by draping a shawl and the two shook hands cordially while someone else garlanded the minister.

Dr Acharya was also en route the same programme that Moily was to attend.

A few minutes after the incident, Moily reached the spot and was accorded a warm welcome.

A Congress worker later said that the felicitation to Dr Acharya was definitely a mistake. He added that in the first instance there were no smiles on their faces, but the second one saw more than its share of smiles!

Dear All, We need to undertand the circumstances when Mr. kader falicitated Mr. Acharya. Mr. Kahder already had approached the convoy of cars thinking that it was Moily and to his surprise , saw Dr Acharya. How can he deny shaking hands or Garland him? He could not have told him. "This was a mistake and we are waiting for Moily"!!.

Just to avoid embarassment to him self and to Mr. Acharya he must have garlanded him and definetely not with great love and appreciation!!. Anyway it was a good gesture and let us forget party lines and respect each others.-Jai Ho

Mr.Khader, you did the right thing. That was the right decision at that moment ! This shows that you dont hate human beings..Probably others would have acted differently... Any way You have shown to them that we can be human being in opposite parties also!! Let your gesture put an end to "hate communal" politics promoted in our 2 districts .let us go back to pre 1990 days, where elections were fought on common issues like employment, corruption, economic upliftment of poor, etc.

Mistake or no Mistake, lets be positive. 2 garlands were used, so atleast the flower vendor made some money for his hard work. Also, lets not forget the pataka wala who supplied the crakers twice. In this time of recession we should cut across party lines and religious divide and spend cash to stimulate the economy. In the end we got a free dose of laughter therapy. :)

Although it was a mistaken identity, the greeting was gentlemanly, unlike any previous incidents and a good lesson for all of us. Here it shows the real personality of a quick thinker and good decision maker. We have to come out of just garlands and shawls and think much beyond that in this fast developing world.

Our politicians also await such greetings and round of applause when they insult the ruling/opposition with silly insulting comments. We must educate and empower ourselves and force them to work for the development of the land rather than preparing for the next election by highlighting silly issues.

Yes, it is a hilarious case but not certainly a of mistaken identity !. Crossing boundaries at Thokottu has become a fashion. During election Nalin Kumar Kateel greeted “Anaa” Janardhan Poojari craving for his Blessings and now U T Khader wanted score a run over it by reciprocate gesture craving for HM Blessings. When people are in ‘Netas’ dress, it is just like Pepsi-Cola and Coca-Cola in different two glasses, has similar properties.

It is humane to error, so let us not make big issue about it. Mr. Khader, would have mistaken the leader in question, but what he did was right at that moment. After all Dr. Acharya is our Home Minister & we have to give him due respect. Stepping back with shawl & garland at that last moment would have been still worse an embarrassment to both..!! A gentleman in a Politician, Mr. Khader, you did the right thing.

The current congress leaders from Magalore & Udupi area are indeed useless comedians. What more proof do we want? That is people do not elect them and they loose elections again again. All these leaders think it is their birth right or family right to be leaders without any achievements. If congress wants to win in Mangalore/Udupi, they have make these useless leaders like Oscar, Poojary etc retire along with their family from politics. Otherewise, they themselves will garland BJP ministers again.
