Mangalore, Jul 17: An accidental appearance of a cave at hilly area, Pedmale in Neermarga on the outskirts here has grabbed the eyeballs of most of the residents of the area. While, few flock the area with natural curiosity the others aware of the historical nature of the area are an anxious lot.

The cave found on the land owned by Ramanna Shetty, an agriculturist, amid small trees in the woods of the hilly area was first noticed by a local farmer two days ago. The farmers and residents of the area frequent the hill to collect leaves used as manure for farming. The cave is more than 35 ft deep and 15 to 20 ft wide. However, the mouth of the cave is only five to six feet wide and four feet deep.

Rumours are thriving with locals coming up with their own story about the cave. The local residents suspect something eerie for the area is rocky excluding the cave area which is muddy devoid of any stones or rock.

Prathap Shetty, local resident said that efforts to unfold the appearance of the cave need to be undertaken. He hints at a scientific or historical reason behind the existence of the cave in the area. He further informs that the area was once ruled by Jain kings and has been a stronghold of Jain community hinting that more research on the area is needed.

The area of Pedmale is endowed with rich natural beauty. On the Pedmale hills is Umamaheshwari Temple, which has ancient history and this hints that the cave too may have some historical importance.

Lancy Pais, Gram Panchayat member of the area said proper investigation may help bring out the truth about the cave. He also feared that if no steps are taken to secure the cave, there is a fear of lives of cattle being endangered.

An interesting development indeed! But it is not an unusual phenomenon that a combination of heavy rain, flowing mud and spreading vegetation changes the topography of earth. It happens in many places. In this case the pictures reveal ruins of some old structures, the history of which should be explored to expose their connection to the new development. The water current flowing through the so-called cave also reveals the possibility of an underground stream that gets activated maybe, with heavy rains. Either possibility will have to be checked by the relevant authorities so that the water source can be conserved and any heritage History of the place can be brought to light!

I feel all these caves found in Neermarga area may be internally connected below the ground. Recently, I had been to see the caverns at Luray in Virginia, USA. These caves were discovered more than 100 years ago. I understand, the loose soil was washed away over a period of time by the leaking spring water and the caves with pillars and ceiling of hard rocks were formed. This is a tourist spot and there is heavy rush particularly at the weekends. I happened to go there with my family and it took us about more than an hour to go through the caverns. It was quite cool inside. There were a couple of lakes inside the cazverns and also a musical arena where folk dances used to take place in olden days. Even now there are reverberating musical notes that can be heard. I feel the archaeological survey of India should investigate and establish the nature of these caves, like it has been done in America, as mentioned above.
