Mangalore, Jul 16: In an effort to instill confidence among the public about their preparedness to deal with situations arising from floods and heavy rains, the district administration arranged a mock drill led by the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) on Thursday July 16.

The drill was held at a low-lying spot surrounded by river water at Kallapu near Thokkottu. The mock drill primarily focused on rescue operations. The operation was held with the help of the CISF, fire department, home guards, and the police.

The NDRF team had arrived from Chennai and was led by NDRF commandant R H Ranmung.

The operation started with three people pretending as if they were drowning in the Netravathi river. The team of rescue guards went on boats announcing that they were on a rescue operation and there was no need to worry. Later, the guards rescued the drowning person and provided him first aid treatment after bringing him on to the river bank.

The same operation was demonstrated on two more people while another managed to reach shore with an empty but closed plastic can on his back, holding the rope fixed by the team. The officials said that this was to show the public that they can swim using such materials with the help of the rope thrown by the rescue team.

S A Prabhakar Sharma, in-charge deputy commissioner, describing the mock drill said this is to create awareness among the public that in any condition they need not fear as such teams are ready to spring into action.

He added that the team will be in the district for two more days and if the rain continues, their stay would be extended.

Besides the fire department, home guards, and senior officials from the district administration were also present at the mock drill.

Mock Drill is only a test to see if the operation can be made possible. However after the test it should be instituted at various place. Have the authorities any intention of doing this? If not THE MOCK DRILL will only be a mockery. Joe Gonsalves

Mr. Antony Crasta, my comments sound negetive..Yes in our villages, it takes ages to get these facilities. This is nothing but a show. regarding swimming..I know swimming to survive in case I fall in a swimming pool..and taking risk at floods is impossible...Even ace swimmers fail in flood situation..!!! Beleiving in such operations and ignoring flood situation is nothing but foolishness..and that is what I wanted to convey...!!!!

Very negative comments and approach of you, Charles D`Mello. Change your attitude and learn to brave the situation. To be specific, learn to swim if you don`t know already, and teach your near and dear ones as well.

This NDRF''s mock demonstration is just a show. They should have demonstrated their preparedness with all their sophesticated equipment before the monsoon floods to gain confidence of victims living in flood effected areas. Now when the flood victims have saved themselves and their next of kin on their own or with the help of their own neighbours, what is the use of NDRF coming there and holding demos and gaining public confidence with the receding flood waters.

This is just waste of time and public money to increase taxes to pay their salaries. This mock demonstration did not save any lives except their own personnel who were pretending to drown. Stop fooling us pleassseeee. We are not fools. Only fools can fool fools you fools.

Guy's if there is a risk of flooding, run away from the place...This kind of assurances generally wont work in case emergency..!!! By the time they reach you, it will be too late. Precaution is better than cure..!!!????
