Udupi: Capacity building programme on Life Skills held at St Mary’s English Medium School

Udupi, Aug 3: A day’s workshop on Life Skills was organized on Saturday, August 3 in the Mother Theresa Hall of St Mary’s English Medium School (CBSE), Kannarpady, in collaboration with CBSE,to meet the present day challenges in the teaching field and to keep the teachers updated on the present generation requirements.

As many as 35 teachers from 14 schools of Udupi and Mangaluru region, 30 teachers from the host school became a part of this enriching and informative seminar.

At 9:00 am the workshop was formally inaugurated by invoking the blessings of almighty and lighting the lamp. The formal function was presided over by Fr Valerian Mendonca, the correspondent of St Mary’s Educational Institutions, Udupi. Fr Johnson L Sequeira welcomed all and introduced the resource person N S Dinesh, principal of Rashi Vdyashram, Salem, to the gathering. “The world today is changing drastically leading to societal and behavioral changes among the children. The life we have seen before and the life we see now has lots of differences and it’s the duty of the teacher to inculcate good values in the children,” opined the correspondent in his presidential speech. He wished all the best to the participants and motivated them by enlightening the importance of having and undergoing such trainings by the teacher facilitators to make the teaching learning process a happy one.



The resource person of the day N S Dinesh began his session at 9:30 am through interaction wherein he asked the participants to list out the carry away of the workshop. The speaker of the day asked the teachers to inspire, influence and set an example to the students through the actions. “Teachers should make use of the three magical words- please, thank you and sorry, should expect the unexpected in the class room and never demand respect from the students,” he said. “Life skills cannot be taught separately in fact it should be collaborated with all the subjects. It is also very important to make the child aware how to apply the skills imparted in the class room when the need arises. Life skills are abilities for adaptive and positive behavior that enable individuals, to deal effectively with the demands and challenges of everyday life,” he added.

All the teacher participants actively took part in all the activities which were a part of the workshop and gained practical experience. The professional quoted, “It is not what you do for your children but what you have taught them to do for themselves that will make them successful human beings” and asked the teachers to provide such an atmosphere where children can think and act on their own.

A formal valedictory ceremony started at 4:00 pm. Teachers from different schools came up with their feedback. The resource person was presented with a memento as a token of respect by the Principal on behalf of the school. Lancy Mendonca coordinated the programme. Roopa Ashok from the host school rendered the vote of thanks. Rita Quadros, vice principal of the school was supportively present throughout.
