Chaplin Statue Finds Home near Bangalore

Times of India

BANGALORE, Mar 21: Finally, The Tramp has found a home near Bangalore. The Charlie Chaplin statue was mired in a controversy as some Hindu outfits objected

to it on the grounds that Chaplin was a Christian. But now the 67-foot-tall statue of the great comedian will be installed at Innovative Film City, just off Bidadi, in 45 to 60 days’ time.

Film-maker Hemanth Hegde told reporters on Friday that Innovative Film City had offered to install the statue. “Government officials said it would take at least four months to clear the proposal if it is government land. They said the procedures take that kind of time. I have to release my film soon, I couldn’t wait. That is why I accepted Innovative’s offer.”

Rajesh Exports, a private firm, has offered to bear the cost of building and installing the statue, estimated at around Rs 30 lakh. Company officials told reporters they had been approached by Hemanth Hegde to help the artist fraternity. “We thought it would be a good contribution to the art heritage of the city. In the interest of art and state tourism, we have decided to sponsor the statue,” they said.

The statue will be built in Bangalore and sculptors will begin work soon. It will sport the look of The Tramp with his bowler hat and walking stick. Once installed, a decision would be taken to open it to public viewing.

Hegde said there was no question of giving into any vigilante group as art and artistes knew no religion. “It is sad Baindur will not have it, but we also think we want people to come and look at him. The best place would be where tourists come. That is why Bangalore suits us.”

Building a permanent statue is a mere stupidity !!!  If you want a statue for the movie make it as temporary and just forget about it. You may be able to save money !!!!

Building a permanent statue is a mere stupidity ! We have seen in Bajpe the stage where pope gave speech was retained for years and one fine morning it was demolished ! Just because it was made ready for pope ! Although it was not an permanent structure ! Such kind of people are in Mangalore and we need not speak anything in Bangalore. If you want a statue for the movie make it as temporary and just forget about it. You may be able to save money

Mr Hegde never had any permission for the statue, nor he had any money for the project. With ease he got all the publicity, and now the sponsorship for the statue as well...with this kind of intellectual bankruptsy, the outcome- the movie - is sure to flop! Sad that an icon of comedy-Charlie Chaplin had to suffer this humiliation in the hands of this stupid director!

Film-maker Hemanth should have realised earlier that Bangalore’s Film City was the right place for the 67-foot-tall statue of the great comedian Charlie Chaplin. A rural beach next to a temple was a wrong place because a big unknown statue in a sleeping village would not have served the purpose.

Mr Bhat,Kumar and Nayak...get it right...any Indian artists or otherwise has the right to install a statue with government permission(if its Public property) and no religious (so called) group should have the right to object. Its none of their business. Indian personalities have their statues in Madame Tassauds in London, gandhiji is South Africa....they are not Christians and they are not citizens either. But they are braodminded people. What some narrowminded Indians need to do is travel the world and broaden their horizons. Its obvious some comment just to get a kick out of it,...but what is important is to make sure in the process of satisfying this need u do not hurt others.....instead a better way is to get mental help through therapy which will be better for you, your family and future of the society.

Mr Joseph, please note Indian ideal characters mean, any one of Good Indian Citizens, including Mother Theresa. Also, I had mentioned etc. in the end, which means there could be any persons from any religion. Perhaps you can take it as only Indian Citizen & Not Foreign person.

You say chaplin statue was not opposed due to religion! You must be as stupid as those bjp fanatics! Bajarang dal leader Mahendra Kumar claimed attacks on Churches, and a bjp/rss fanatic minister said 'not bajarang dal'! Now some anti social organisation disrupts chaplin statue saying he is 'not Indian, but Christian,' & you say 'not because he is Christian!' Another goof! Sure. Just as fanatic and stupid as that minister. Good roads, potable water, health, communal harmony etc are really the need of the hour, need of people. And a power-greedy and shameless party like bjp cannot provide them. Never. No to bjp, no to corruption, no to hypocrisy. Anybody but bjp, please!

We have to recognise the contribution of our great film artist of all time Dr.Raj Kumar to kannada entertainment industry and in his honour and memory a statue be instlled in Mangalore. Why should we have a statue of Chaplin in Karnataka, which is arousing passions of our NRI people?

Mr. Kumar Mangalore/Mumbai, Why not mentioned any Christian name in your comments and mentioning only Abdul Kalam and M. Vishveshwariah? You did not find Mother Theresa or Sister Nirmala? Forget Charlie Chaplin because Christians have not proposed or nor Christians were behind this statue. Any Christian name is a foreign identity? Kindly explain.

Chaplin statue was opposed not because he was Christian, but because he was not of Indian tradition. Had the statue to built was Indian persons or Indian ideal characters, irrespective of religion, say Abdul Kalam, Mahatama Gandhi, M Vishveshwariah, etc. oppositions would hadvebeen virtually nil.

I wished Karnataka Govt. had the guts to rule the State where citizens rights were protected....despite religious narrowminded objections and narrow minded culture protectionsts. Its obvious we lack good managers at the State level as well as local level. Nipping those upcoming trouble makers would be the way forward for India. But are politicians willing or listening? We lack Quality of leadership with vision.
