Mangalore, Mar. 21:   A  private city bus deviated from the road near Jappinamogeru, Ullal and   plunged down  the gorge about 20 feet below at around 6.30 am on Saturday, March 21 after its driver lost control over the vehicle. 47 persons including the driver and conductor of the bus were injured in the incident.

The conductor  and the bus driver have sustained critical  injuries, while the passengers escaped with   minor  injuries. 10 passengers have been admitted into a private hospital in Ullal and several others are undergoing treatment at the  government hospital in city.

The bus rolled while hurtling down. A few years ago, a private  bus had fallen down at the same spot, which is located at a dangerous, steep bend on the national highway 17.

The bus that bears the name, 'Raviraj' belongs to  Raviraj Motors, was plying on route number  42. The bus was carrying passengers bound for the city, mostly for reaching their work places.

The bus was coming to the State Bank bus stop in the  city  from Talapady when it met with an accident. Machanical  fault  in the bus  is said to be  the main reason  for the accident.

Eye witnesses said, considering the gravity of the accident, it was miraculous that the passengers escaped with only minor injuries.

Mangalore rural police rushed to the spot. The injured were taken to  hospitals in  ambulances and other vehicles. The bus has also suffered damages in the accident.

RTO should look beyond India & study the traffic system abroad. There is speed limit for every road, correct light indicators, minimum gap between two vehicles etc. but in India drivers don’t know how to use them correctly.

The public carrier drivers should be given a lesson on: where not to stop, where not to park, when to overtake, which indicator light should be used for overtake in NH roads etc. In India every body is in mad rush & in the end the traffic moves in a slow pace because there is no traffic discipline and the cops are corrupt.

How can we blame the driver if it was a mechanical fault!! I am not a fan of these drivers ,but in this case we can say this driver did a good job of guiding the bus down the slope.

The RTO/munciplaity are equally to be blamed with the careless driver. This patch of road has seen numerous accidents for years, they should be settiing up roadside barriers or widening/straightening the road. God forbid, the next big disaster will be the Nethravati bridge. Its high time government took action to build new bridge or do proper maintenance of the existing one.

Saving the allotted time of journey by waiting at all bus stops unnecessarily untill they see the bus running behind even if the buses are over crowded is the common sight. It is a practice by every city bus operating in Mangalore .Thats why politicians say the service of city bus owners is the best in the world. May GOD show his courtesy and and save the life of the passengers travelling in city buses.
