Udupi: Tension in Kaup; Vehicle Movement on Highway Comes to Standstill

Daijiworld Media Network - Udupi (SP)

Udupi, Mar 16: After miscreants pelted stones at the vehicles that were returning after taking part in the Hindu Samjotsav programme held in Mangalore and also the vehicle in which Udupi superintendent of police(SP) Pravin Madhukar Pawar was travelling at Kaup near here on Sunday March 15, the SP was injured. About 25 people were also injured in the incident that occurred at around 7 pm.

The policemen have arrested about 20 miscreants from the mosque in Kaup from where the stones were hurled. The people of Kaup have grown apprehensive and tension is in the air. However, the policemen have taken initiatives to ensure that the situation does not go out of hand.

The incident occured inspite of the presence of the police strength at Kaup in view of the Samajotsav. After stones damaged buses at Koppalanagady near Kaup and injured some people, vehicles gathered in front of Hosa Mariyamma Temple in Kaup. The general public, agitated over the incident, blocked traffic on the highway No.17. Heated discussions ensued between people who were angered by the incident and those who tried to pacify the crowd.

The policemen rushed to the spot, after coming to know of the incident. Miscreants pelted stones at their vehicles from the direction of Polipu mosque. As SP Pravin Madhukar Pawar opened the door of his car and got down, a stone hit his head. The backside of his head was injured, and the policemen admitted Pawar to a private hospital in Kaup, in an unconscious condition.

After people gathered in large numbers both on the roadside and inside the mosque premises, the policemen fired in the air, sensing that the situation might go out of control. They also resorted to lathi charge. MLA Lalaji Mendon and Kollur temple managing trustee Krishna Prasad Adyantaya, Karunakar Salian of Hindu Jagran Vedike and Vijay Karkera of the BJP took the lead in pacifying the agitated Hindu leaders not to resort to retaliatory measures by hurling stones at the mosque. Glass splinters and stones were found scattered on the  highway at Polipu immediately after the incident.

As the vehicles coming from both the directions stopped because of the disturbance, long lines of vehicles were formed on both the sides. Later, the policemen redirected buses coming from Padubidri direction via Karkala road and those coming from Udupi, via Katpady. Western range inspector general of police too paid a visit the spot and issued directions to the policemen. Shiroor Math Swamiji too visited the site and requested the policemen to take firm steps to control the situation. Additional police forces were rushed from Mangalore and the policemen of the rank of deputy superintendent of police and circle inspector have camped at Kaup.

The arrested miscreants included some well known faces, it is learnt. Stones, soda bottles, sticks etc., found stacked inside the mosque were taken into possession by the policemen. Local people, Hindu activists, passengers and policemen are among those injured in the incident.

Home minister Dr V S Acharya has said that the policemen will investigate the issue and take steps against the trouble mongers. MLA Lalaji Mendon too has urged the policemen to arrest the miscreants within 24 hours and take legal action against them.

SP Commended: The people were surprised at the extra-ordinary courage and determination shown by the Udupi SP. Even after he was injured after a stone hit his head hard and the SP was about to collapse, the policemen supported him and took him to a hospital. Even in this condition, he at first, refused to go to the hospital and insisted on remaining on the spot to control the situation.

Vittal Report: Miscreants pelted stones at two private buses and several buses that were returning from Hindu Samajotsav at Okkettoor and Maripalla, at around 9 pm, giving rise to anger among the Hindu activists who were preparing to retaliate. Eye witnesses said that the miscreants hid themselves behind a hillock at the bend located after the Okkettoor bridge and hurled stones at the vehicles. Later, two cars coming from Mangalore at about 9.30 pm also came under the attack of the miscreants. Two contingents of the DRI have been deployed at the spot.

A jeep was damaged after it was stoned at, by the miscreants at Maripalla near Bantwal. A person named Tammaiah Gowda from Kadaba was injured in the incident. He has been admited into a private hospital nearby.

All those members who are involved in the incident must be published with name and photo so that all of us can identify who is the real culprit. We dont need show of strength. We are not at war with each other. We need solidarity and love and peaceful co existance. Will these samajotsava or its organisers preach and promote love and peace. Why inciting one community against the other?? We are born here as per Gods wish and its not our wish. Had it been its our wish, we would have born in Europe or America. We have been living in this part of the world as one since ages and there was no division. Of late the BJP/VHP and the religious leaders started spilling the beans of hatred and alienation in our peaceful society. Minorities were looked in tinted glasses. No majority were attacked by the minorities in the name of releigion or dharma. But personal enemity is there always. No religion preached and practiced hate against another religion. No mandir or mutts were attacked by the minority people. The organisers of this utsava has given inflamatroy speeches and the attendees are jobless uneducated villagers who were carried away by these hateful speeches. Can any one start preaching and promoting love in these samajotsavas? We need mandirs, masjids and churches side by side, hindus, muslims and christians as neighbours. Will any one preach this. We need our children to play and grow in the company of hinuds and christians and vice versa. Would any one preach this?? We wish our preachers would stop this hate campaign. If it is not curbed, definitely the day shall not be very far when we have to stand up and defend ourselves. There is limit for everything and we are running out of patience. Mind you that injured lion never keeps quiet.

Dr Shivashankar Bhat Angri: world would be a better place without religion. I agree with you or maybe it would be a better place if everyone practiced what your holy book says especially that which propagates love, peace, harmony and brotherhood. Or perhaps it would be a better place if religion which is very personal, can be kept out of all politics especially BJP which rides on it. We are no less affected mentally even though we are in a distant land looking at our native land bleeding. All miscreants regardless of their beliefs and religion should be punished in the harshest possible way. There shouldn't be any discrimination whatsoever. India is democracy, but looking at the things happenening is very bad for dremocracy, as such we cannot see any improvemnt during our life time because of all these compounded religious problems. Therefore the best thing is to keep religion inside one's home, church, mosque and temple and ban all religious programs/processions outside either on the road or in the open.If we continue the present system mothers may lose their son, wife her husband and many will become orphans. Ultimately the country will go to dogs. Some people I think are hell bent on destroying this beautiful contry of ours.Pl for God's sake ban all religions coming out in the open to pray in the name of God. We will pray to God that God sense will prevail amongst all religions & it's people.

Common knowledge is encough to understand that when large number of one community gathered, opposite community will not attack on majority group. No one felted stone on anybody, this is nothing but pre planned reason for communal voilence. History is witness. All religions followers should know that God is one, just our way of worship is different. Then why we are hate each other. Life is very short which should not be wasted in communal matters. The area is filled with houses of a particular community. When there is a wrong step from Sangh Pariwar, everybody jumps in here and make strong comments. However, in this case, I don't see the same outrage. As an Indian, I'm appealing to every sane mangalorean out there to condemn bad behaviour from both sides. If we continue to blame only one side, I'm afraid, there could be another gujarath in Mangalore area. My minority brothers need to understand this.

I think minority community members are not too much fool to give stick and get beat back. In Indian communal violence history , most communal violences start with stone throwing to buses and processions . But stone thrower are not identified , the result is severe backlash of atrocities against minorities. This happens everywhere every time . So, let the authorities try to catch those stone throwers , bring them forward , tear their masks , give them punishment they deserve irrespective of the religion they belong to . Don't judge based on prejudice and pre plan. let us know who are criminals.

Catch the culprits before things turn to worse from bad.. Media would blame hindus for the acts.. Media would not have hesitated to identify the community if it was done by Hindus..

Outcome of hate compaign and devisive politics by fundamentalists. If not curbed now, future is very harsh reality and there shall be volcanic eruptions throughout the coastal districts in the future. Religious people should be confined to their places and should not be let to address the public that too spitting venom against another religion. Whatever be the faith, there should not be hate against other faiths.

It is Very Sad. What has happend to our South Kanara. Which was well known for peace and harmoney. I suspect it is not the people of South Kanara. These miscrents are outsiders belong definately to uneducated unemployed Group. Some how they want to distrub the peace and earn their bread.District administration must be handed over to District Commissioner who is capable to take better and appropriate action to controle the situation.

Some religious leaders are learned their religion prefessionaly studying 10 or 12 years prior to preach thier followers and some religious leader are use thier common sense to preach their followers without knowing the human value or society. These kind of preaching impact the society and the ultimate result is like Kaup or Mangalore recent attacks on good people for no reasons. From these kind of attacks are the benifits only for the politians and not for the common fellow Indians.
