Mr Alex, I was also a student who was denied hall ticket in 2002 and I totally understand what you are going through. However rules have been made to enhance and smoothen the function of an organisation/ board. There might be a valid reason for your child not attending classes or there might be no reason at all for someone else not attending college.

The question here is where the college administration made aware of such a case at the RIGHT TIME and has the absenteeism been substantiated?If yes the college would definitely extend their support to your child next time. And believe me the support is that you cannot even dream of.

In my case it was a medical reason I had not made it to my Degree exams in 2002. And my mom also behaved the same way as many of the parents have behaved this time.She retaliated with me ( not with the college). But thats when my college supported me and convinced her about my difficulty and I salute my college for the support they extended to me in answering the exams the next year(2003).Right from 2002 May to 2003 May I was a specially recognised person in college who did not pay any fees to the college ( though not a regular student) but have enjoyed each facility of the LAB, classroom, Lecturers and all the support that words are not enough to mention.

I was a life science graduate and had to keep in touch with Chemistry, Botany and Zoology labs for a year and that too with my juniors. For no fault of mine...:-)I had no attendance shortage as well.The only issue was I could not answer my exams the day it was scheduled since I underwent an operation a week before the hall tickets were issued. My mom wanted me to answer the exams coz she didnt want me to lose a year.

I was declared medically fit by my doctors.It was only my lecturers who had seen me day in and day out who came to my rescue and advised me to answer the supplementary exams.I did not want to coz I was a merit student.I also received 5 awards from a 90% Boys and 10% girls college for the best association, best outgoing, best leadership award and merit certificates in 2002.

With all this, I was supposed to answer my exams and no where was it mentioned in the rules that I could not be issued a hall ticket. I have gone through the same and the trauma is huge.But in this situation a few questions I would have asked as a student/ parent before taking grave steps was: Am I right? Is the child right? Is there any way I could resolve this problem? Is the college going to break rules? Will it have to answer the higher ups if issued hall tickets against the rules? Again, if issued hall tickets wouldnt all the ex students who have faced similar situations retaliate? What about students from other colleges who also have been denied hall tickets this year?

While the parents search for answers to these questions....I now stand up and support MY COLLEGE AS AN ACT OF RESPECT AND GRATITUDE FOR ALL THAT IT HAS GIVE

I know the reason for less attendence. I stand by the Principal. He is right according to the PU board rules. It takes guts to be a Principal of an respectable institution like St. Allosius. Let me clarify, we have not participated in the happenings. We have been constantly in touch with college management for all matters. So, the point I wish to make is this, by showing the children your muscle and social connections, you will spoil their future, mind, body and soul. Venance I dont think this should come as a major shock to these students as St. Aloysius has devised a very efficient way to mointor students attendance and then report it to their parents - they send attendance reports to parents along with their examination results. Moreover, the PU Board has made strict rules this year regarding minimum attendance requirements. This being the case parents and students should have tackeled attendance issues right from the begenning than crying at the end. Knowing Mr. DSilva personally, I can confidently say that he is a man of principles and discpline. He is definetly not to be blamed for the whole incident. It is the students who should be blamed for taking things carelessly.

It makes more sense to talk to the Director of PU Board about the hall tickets than harrassing the Principal for it. The principal is just following the PU rules. Even if the Principal issues the hall tickets under pressure, the PU Board can make their exams invalid to be fair to the students who have above 75% attendance.

I still remember as an old student of St. Aloysius (30yrs ago) many many cases where students were not issued hall tickets because of lack of attendence. Nobody made any noise or threatened the college authorities. They accepted their mistakes and negligence. I still remember couple of those guys who went on to be toppers. I wonder what kind of society we have these days with students being rude, vulgar, arrogant and also threatening lives of responsible people running an institution with over 100 years of reputation. I wonder how they get seats in the first place.

I am a former student. The college is just following the PPUC rules. Student to be expelled and set a good example. College has never disciminated against any religion - infact quite the contrary- trust me I am a hindu from grade 1 to college- Me and hundreds of others have benifited a lot. Even I have studied in this institution for 3 years. But in our class we had big bunch of students who were bunking the classes including me. But we carried the calender daily and we made note of all the classes attended/to be attended while making sure that we did not get into trouble at the end of the year. I think this is a common pratice with most of the Aloysians if not all.

The parents should be grateful that at least this great institution is trying to instill some discipline in their children when they themselves have failed to do so. It is shameful that we have organizations in Mangalore which are actually encouraging INDISCIPLINE among students, fighting for INJUSTICE, criminally intimidating the College authorities and also want to CONTRAVENE well set out rules by the PU Education Board and the Government. The peaceful reputation of Mangalore has already been tarnished and now the reputation of the educational institutions of DK itself is at stake. Why cant SAPUC learn the method to overcome this problem from Degree college? In SAEC, principal warns the students who has got shortage of attendance well in advance(1 or 2 month) so that they make up the shortage and again if they fail they are barred from writing exam. I think giving warning all of a sudden will make students panic and go for unlawfull method I know this is not a good solution student need to attend the classes. but at least the Principal can tell that he had given a chance to the students to make up their attendance shortage.

I studied at St.Aloysius 1984- 1987. Our group used to bunk classes.,though only for Kannada period. But we always kept attendance records & made sure that it did not go below 75%. Those below 75% got warning memos in advance. I still remember, when I was in Final year B’com ( 1986-87 ) , after winning college election student leaders ( President & Secretary ) undertook a procession without the permission of College Management, resulting in Fr.Principal debarring both leaders. Our student leaders called STRIKE , but most of us did not supported, because nobody wanted to geoparadise their future life. Ultimately student leaders came to the feet of Fr. Principal. After 22 years my graduation, I still remember this incident. As a parent its our duty to check & keep track of our children & not to blame college Principal or Authorities.

This act by students is a shameful one. All college students are mature enough to understand the fact that 75% attendance is mandatory to get a hall ticket. If anyone is not meeting this basic requirment of education system, he/she should not think that getting the exam hall ticket is his birth right. The ABVP has showed its true colors. Since the threat was subject to one student (Ms.Varsha) then the police should make enquiries about the caller who gave threat to the principal .If this time SAC agree to give hall tickets to the defaulters then this will continue every year and there will be intervention of ABVP for admissions also. The Police should guard the SAC and responsible for any threat to the principal.

According to me the Principal has only followed the Rules and regulations. In 1993 when I was in my 2nd year of BBM in PPC, Udupi there were some students in the Final year who were denied the permission to answer the Final exam in April 1993. They had then appeared for all the exams in the month of October. College students do bunk the classes. Even i have done that, but within the limits. I think The Principal has done the right thing.

The college has done right thing in witholding hall tickets. This will give a lesson to fellow students for being punctual in the class. I have studied in one of the government college and i remember one of our class mate was denied hall ticket due to poor attendance. I have not seen anybody objeted for it. I strongly say that mistake is from parents who have not checked their son/daughter's attendence through out the year. Shame on parents who supporting their children in this case.

Giving a life threat to a lecturer/principal is not a students quality its a nature of goonda. so i urge all the students to apologies for threatening Principal. But i think in such moments of they must protest in a civilized manner I am also an old student of this same institution who was also denied of Hall ticket on the basis of Attendance shortage,in my case attendance shortage occurred because of I was attending NCC camps & Mr. John, Dean of institution suspended me several times just because i looked "Healthy".

In Mr. John is prejudiced that all the students who look strong are the one who create trouble in the college. and i was honored as Best NCC cadet the same year i was denied of writing exam also as a irony the part of the same institution St.Aloysius Evening College honored me last year with BEST OUTGOING STUDENT. it shows that Mr. John was wrong in my case as well as many others cause many of my other friends who were not allowed to write the exam were also similarly honored in their respective institutions College Wants students to participate in Co curricular activities ( in my case NCC)but when it comes about attendance it dos not honor our request ( there is a co-curricular activity attendance form even it does not work). so i urge Rector and Management of St. Aloysius institutions about Mr. John E D'silva. No doubt Mr. D'Silva is a good administrator but he fails to understand the students. I feel sorry for you Oh my Alma mater

the only ticket they can claim as a right is a ticket to contest the elections - that is the only field that suits them well - no attendance is required once elected either in the representative house or in the constituency until it is time for the next election - no descipline to be maintained the house of representatives. Life threat is the last thing anybody can do. It is better to dismiss these students who involved in the threat and be given a bad conduct certificate.

After DDPU visit, it has been confirmed that the said hall tickets shoud not be issued. ABVP members please divert your threatening approach to University....but after consulting students parents.....! otherwise next year parents should look out for some other goons for solving their more serious problems

The Princiapl has done the right thing. If the rules and regulations of educational institutions are not followed and implemented, such institutions will lose their reputation. Anyhow, if these students are our future citizens, a good lesson to them. But now the police should make thorough interrogations to avoide such incedents in the future.

Rules & Regulations are made to be followed by all. The reason St. Aloysius as well as other christian schools & colleges are shining today is because of its strict rules, this is the reason why there is so much demand for them. Its a lesson for all students and parents, never to take things too lightly all thro' the year and then regret. Do not side your children when they have done something wrong. This lesson will help them to be more careful & responsible in future.

Dear Nicholas, You should not be saying this " forgive the students now and next time to give one or two month notice" Look at what this students have done called press conference, given life threat to the Principal, rules are same for everyone. it is mandatory to have 75% attendence to attend exams, as far as I know this fact is known to all the students well in advance and am dam sure that these students were also aware of this as well. We also used to bunk classes, we also enjoyed college life but also kept in mind the requirements and our future which these students have not. Mr Vijay says this incident is a lesson to catholic institutions, i feel this comment is very worng at this time. Please readers evaluate what you comment as it may add fire to the issue.Dear Principal you have done your duty our support and prayers are with you.

Those who have given communal color to this just cause taken by the Principal of St.Aloysius College know that out of 12 students 6 are Hindus, 4 are christians and 2 are muslims. If those who preach justice and truth should practice it. Here it shows their organisation ethics and goonda raj. Well done College. The maximum they will do give threat to life. What else. My dear Friends pls do not give political colour to this issue and spoilt the student further more. Let the student deserve what they are. When there is genuine reason definitely every collage Principals considers & the student will be loyal. Imagine this type of students bunk the class & do what all nonsense, even in exams definitely they will cheat and bring good marks and make hard working student bow his/her head down. I studied at this college from 1957 to 1968. Even after 40 years, I mention my schooling days with great pride. This college was built and is run by priests of Society of Jesus.Thousands of students like me have passed through this college and have settled at various destinations world-wide. All of them are greatful for this college to their success. We all followed the rules during our time.No one was spared for breaking the rules in the past and I do not see why they shold be spared now.Some day in the future, these students will appriciate that they were reprimanded and were made to mend thier ways. It is really sad to see the presnt events reach to a point of life threat and violent protests.

Instead of attending classes when they should have , these children may have been roaming around town or sitting in the canteen when bunking classes.Now they expect to be given Hall Tickets?If they are not able to follow the rules of the college then they should not join schools and colleges which adhere to the rules.Where were these students and how did they end up with attendance shortage?If they have genuine reason's then they should be given Hall tickets otherwise they should not.If they are not held responsible for their actions now they will never realize later on in life to take responsibility for anything.Strikes and barging into Principle's Offices can not be done in the larger scheme of life.

ALOYSIUS, they can very well go to any of the disorganized colleges in the city. Sadly, the politians have a hand in it.
