Sri Lanka Cricket Team's Bus Attacked in Pakistan - Four Players Injured

Pak hints at Indian involvement in attack on Lanka team

LAHORE, Mar 3:
Indian involvement in the terror attack on the Sri Lankan cricket team cannot be ruled out, Lahore Commissioner Khushro Pervaiz was quoted  as saying Tuesday.

Pervaiz also said that security officials had successfully protected the Sri Lankan team, Geo TV reported.

India was trying to weaken Pakistan, added Gen (retired) Hameed Gul, a former chief of the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI).

He told Geo News that India wanted to declare Pakistan a terrorist state and the firing on the Sri Lankan team was related to that conspiracy.

Six escorting security personnel were killed and six Sri Lankan cricketers as well as the assistant coach were injured when the team cavalcade was targeted by heavily armed gunmen close to the Gaddafi Stadium while they were going to play the third day of the second Test against Pakistan.

Reacting to the attack, India's foreign minister Pranab Mukherjee said in New Delhi: "The terrorism infrastructure facilities available in Pakistan must be completely dismantled and the perpetrators (of the attacks) brought to justice, otherwise perpetration of these types of incidents will take place.

"I request the Pakistani authorities not to divert the attention of the international community, but to take courage in both hands and dismantle the terrorism infrastructure and take stiff measures against the perpetrators. Only then will such issues be adequately addressed."

Sri Lanka Cricket Team's Bus Attacked in Pakistan - Four Players Injured

Rediff

Lahore, Mar 3: Gunmen killed at least four people in an attack on the Sri Lankan cricket team's bus on Tuesday as it drove to the Gadaffi stadium in Lahore , according to witnesses and cricket officials.

Sri Lankan media, quoting the sports minister, said four players received minor injuries in the attack -- Kumar Sangakkara, Ajantha Mendis, Thilan Samaraweera and Tharanga Paranavithana.

Pakistan television channels said four people were killed.

A witness told Reuters he believed two police commandos were killed along with a regular policeman and a traffic warden. Shopkeeper Ahmed Ali said the two police commandos had been driving behind the team bus when they were hit.

"It was a very heavy firing and I heard at least two explosions at the time," said a Reuters witness who had been on his way to cover the Test match between Pakistan and Sri Lanka .

Pakistan only invited the Sri Lanka team to tour after India's team pulled out with security concerns following the militant attacks on the Indian city of Mumbai in November.

According to PTI, the incident took place when the Sri Lankan team was attacked by around 10 armed gunmen near the Liberty Chowk which is close to the stadium.

"The firing took place from at least four sides and continued for some minutes," one police official said.

One explosion was also heard at the stadium, PTI adds.

The attackers later escaped in separate groups.

The liaison officer of the Pakistan team said players of the host nation have been sent back to the hotel.

"The Sri Lankan players are presently safe at the Gaddafi stadium and they are getting treatment," one PCB official told PTI.

Sources also claimed that the police had received a threat on Monday that the Sri Lankan team would be attacked so a different route was used to transport the team to the stadium.

"The firing took place from at least four sides and continued for some minutes," one police official said.

"There were 12 masked gunmen," Lahore police chief Habib-ur Rehman told reporters, adding that police battled against the assailants for about 25 minutes.

"They appeared to be well-trained terrorists. They came on rickshaws. They were armed with rockets, hand grenades, Kalashnikovs," he said.

Television channels aired footage of at least two of the gunmen, one of them wearing shalwar kameez and other jeans and a jacket. Both were armed with assault rifles and carrying backpacks.

Police cordoned off the area immediately after the attack and launched a search for the gunmen. The driver of the cricket team's bus drove away from the spot immediately after the firing started.

"We are assessing the situation," Pakistan Cricket Board chief Ejaz Butt said.

"Five policemen who were providing protection to the team sacrificed their lives," he added.

Samaraweera shot in chest: TV reports

NEW DELHI: Sri Lankan cricketers Thilan Samaraweera and Tharanga Paranawitharana were among the six cricketers injured in the attack on the cricket
team in Lahore. TV reports say that Samaraweera has been shot in the chest and is being operated upon.

Unidentified gunmen targeted the team as it was entering the Gaddafi Stadium for the ongoing Test match against Pakistan.

A Sri Lankan foreign ministry official confirmed that two players, Thilan Samaraweera and Tharanga Paranavitana, have been hospitalized. He said 3-4 more players were slightly injured, including Kumara Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardene, and that the head coach, Australian Trevor Bayliss, also sustained minor injuries. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to the media.

IANS from Colombo reports that CEO of Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) Duleep Mendis said that double centurion Samaraweera and Paranawitharana were wounded when they were entering the match venue.

Team captain Mahela Jayawardene's father said his son had just called his wife from Lahore to say that he too had suffered minor injuries in his leg during the attack that has shocked the world.

"We were just informed that our players were shot at while travelling to the match venue at Lahore. We are very concerned about the incident," Sri Lankan Sports Minister Gamini Lokuge said.

Six policemen escorting the team bus were killed in the attack that took place as the team was travelling to the Lahore venue to resume the second day's play of the second and last Test match.

Security concerns have plagued Pakistan for years and some foreign sports teams have refused to play here.

Jude, You have rightly described Hameed Gul, as a rabid fanatic and a hard core Lunatic. I would say that he is mentally ill because how can a retired general and a former ISI chief make such a comment when his security was weak and was not able to capture even one terrorist to prove that the terrorist was an Indian. Unlike the Indians, who captured Qasab (an original Paki) in the Mumbai attacks.

I agree with Mr Madhav, For too long now we have relied on diplomacy and help of the EU and the USA to put some sense into the Pakistan government and military. But this has only enboldend them to conduct more attacks. Time is now running out for Pakistan and if it fails to act then it will be left to our armed forces to finish this nonsense once and for all. Instead of commenting on this news article people are busy scoring brownie points over each other by writing silly comments. It is so sad that our communities have been so polarized over the past 6 - 8 months that we have started hating each other on the basis of our religion.

Here is a rabid fanatic and an anti Indian lunatic Hamid Gul who created the Taleban, blaming India for all terrorist activities happening in Pakistan. This man is a fool and we need to condemn what he says. All that the terrorists are doing today in Pakistan is biting the very same hand that fed them.

Hamid Gul is the architect who created this monster and the very same monster has turned its head and is eating his country. Instead of accepting the folly of its anti India policies, Pakistan is still in a denial mood. One of the positives is the reactions comming out from the Pakistan press and the common man there.

All this while the government and the military had been fooling them by creating an Indian boogey, but now the people have woken up and started asking questions. Mad fanatics like Hamid Gul and his associates can no longer fool the Pakistan public.

One hopes that the common man there wakes up and unites. Pakistan today is on the verge of collapse and unless the man on the streets in Pakistan takes upon himself to clear the mess once and for all, there will be no Pakistan left in a few years time. That is the biggest danger to India and the whole world.

I also hope that the US government realises that they have been taken for a ride all along by the Pakistan military and take some positive steps and clear the mess which they themselves helped create by funding the taleban and the mujaideen.

Pak blaming India is nothing but a joke. It is just to undermine their terrorism in India. Pakis always said that the terrorism in India is engineered by India itself in order to blame them. As per them, 26/11, attack on Indian Parliament and some religious shrines, hijacking of Indian plane to Kandhar, etc. were all done by the Indians. Are they so stupid to think that people are so naive to believe them? Pak is the biggest contributor to terrorism. It has sowed terrorism all over the world and it is now reaping it. By visiting Pakistan, Srilankans threw a challenge at the Talibans and rest is the history.

US and other developed countries are playing a larger conspiracy. By instigating terror in Pakistan and in India they try to keep check on Indian economy so that prople are constantly under fear of terrorism and no development takes place for them to be strong economies.

This is what precisely they have done to their own people in US. All the activities of terrorism are planned in the US because they want the whole world to be in fear forever so that countries buy arms and ammunitions from them. In the process, our politicians take undue advantage of innocent citizens.

Ultimate motive of the strong countries is that they want poor countries to remain poor so that they do not challenge the sovereignty of developed or rich countries. All the happenings are a big conspiracy and a high level plan to fool people like you and me. US knows what it is doing.

First of all, whoever is at blame, PAKISTAN could not provide the Lankan cricketers top class security. This despite the fact that the Lankans were actually doing them a favour by touring Pakistan. It is clear that security was inadequate otherwise this so called security could have killed at least one of the terrorists. The main question is how this fully loaded (with guns and grenades) vehicle reached the stadium? If the area was secured then none of the terrorist would have escaped. This shows the weakness of Pakistani government and its security forces if that is not true then ISI is certainly involved in this attack.

Pakistan is suffering this types of terrorists attacks because they are the ones who feeded these terrorist activities. There is a saying in Hindi "Jaisi Karni Waisi Bharni", and in Kannada "Maadidunno Maharaya". Strict actions should be taken either by the Pak Govt or UN or US Govt to curb this Terrorism. Unfortunate for Sri Lankan players as they thought that they are undeterred by the terrorism from Pakistan and scoring double centuries. How come possible? Pakistan cricket is supreme (as per Pakistan). If Pakistan was allowed to win Lankans might have been spared. But this is cricket either by match fix or by terrorism.

I think now onwards no cricket nations will come to play in Pakistan. The present and the previous governments were under the mercy of Al Qaida without which no ruler can rule Pakistan.

I dont know what Mr. Rajesh Shetty is telling. He is comparing Karnataka to Pakistan. I think first people like him should be sent to Pakistan (if he feels so much for that country) so that he can fight terrorism there. The whole world knows that Pakistan is waging a proxy war post independence after it lost all the wars with India with the help of the so-called "jihadis" or terrorists. Now its plan has backfired. Jai Hind.

Shocked  to see how Pakistan is going to the extremes. They are digging their own graves. Shame that nothing can be controlled in Pakistan. A country like Sri Lanka being targetted this time. Why Srilanka? Why the innocent players had to go thru' this horrific incidence. Terrorism has to end, who is to bell the cat?

Dear Zara, It is very sad that terrorists are targeting even sports. Terrorist have no religion, no country see e.g. Pramod mutalik involve in MALEGAO attach. Karnataka government supporting terrorist and same Pakistan government is supporting terrorist.

If other states stop doing business with Karnataka, as you like where we go. Here question is we do not support any terrorist attaching mentality people. In whole world have terrorist. We come to unit and fight against terrorist. We cannot fight against country innocent peoples are living all countries.

US administration be that of George Bush or now that of Obama, is bluffing the world, about its intentions on, war on terror. Though the US people voted for a change, to see peace in the world are deceived either. US is blaming India about the hawala money going to fund terror activities, but they are funding terror directly by legally giving money and arms to Pakistan, knowing fully well, the final destination for them is the ISI, taleban or Al Qaeda.

The world including India, has to rise against the US administration and tell them enough is enough, stop giving money to terror through Pakistan. If this is not done soon enough, US will protect itself, by destroying the rest of the world.

I thank God almighty because our Indian players didn’t travel to Pakistan, the world’s most dangerous country. Even though, the safety of the touring cricketers have been assured by the government security agencies and Pakistan Cricket Board but nothing could stop the gunmen attacks. In spite of change in the team route the attack was inevitable that means the security personnel’s are involved in this heinous crime.

It is wake up call for Indian government to take strict action against the perpetrators who take the law into their own hands in the name of religion, party, culture, tradition & ideology. India should avoid all sort of relationship with Pakistan until the real democratic government instated in Pakistan. We are sorry for Sri Lankan cricketers and Cricket Sri Lanka. We hope & pray that all the injured cricketers will recover in no time.

It is really unfortunate thing to happen. It reminds me the massacre happened during Olympics where terrorists killed number of players belonging to Israel. Where are those pseudo secularist who trumphet to continue dealing with Pakistan. Please note that this is the beginning since SWAT valley has been donated to Talibanis and they slowly gobble up Pakistan like Anaconda gobble its pry.

This happened few months Back"India had called off their tour of Pakistan in December in the wake of the deadly attacks in Mumbai, which India blamed on Pakistan-based militants. Sri Lanka then agreed to replace India and split their tours in two visits - playing the three-match one-day series in January followed by the two Tests."Now it happened what we expected. We pray for speedy recovery of those injured Lankan Players.

It is very sad that even sports are being targeted by terrorists. It is a heinous crime - not just because cricketers are involved, but because innocent are the victims of terrorism. Any nation which supports terrorism in any form will pay dearly for its power-greed. Indian politicians and administration should learn a lesson from such unfortunate incidents not to allow self-styled (im)moral / cultural police to take democracy for ransom. I condemn the attack in Lahore.

Really a sad incident. I have always said that we Indians should stop all the cultural, trade, business, sports or any other type of activities with Pakistan. When the BCCI said it was not willing to send the Indian team to Pak, many people told that India should tour Pak, politics should not be mixed with cricket, etc. Wasim Akram too told that India should not cancel the tour. Now look what has happened. Thank god BCCI and Indian govt took the right decison.
