Udupi: Doctors need to be Aware of Patient's Rights - Dr Shanbhogue

Udupi, Jan 26: Dr Ravindra Shanbhogue, dean of Shoolini Institute of Life, Himachal Pradesh University explained, that the patients have seven types of rights including getting full details of his/her ailment, learning about the treatment methodology, rejecting them, selection of a method of treatment by the patient’s successors if the patient is unfit to decide on them, etc. The doctors, in addition to having medical knowledge required to treat patients, also need to have knowledge of the rights of the patients, he stressed.

Speaking after presiding over the inaugural of the 'Brain Scan' quiz programme organized on Sunday January 25 at Ambalpady temple hall here by Prithivi Institute of Management Education and Trisha Classes in association with Lions Club, Shanhogue warned that the doctors may face unnecessary litigations if they do not take care and be equipped with knowledge about the rights of the patients.

Shanbhogue lamented the fact that people crave to get through IPS and IAS examinations for getting powerful posts instead of looking at it as an opportunity to affectively serve the people. For lack of proper guidance, the people of the twin-districts do not normally get through the IAS examinations although Biharis, who are much less intelligent, are able to pass these examinations, he felt.

Temple trustee N B Vijay Ballal inaugurated the programme. Manipal KMC dean Dr P Sripati Rao advised students to always aim at getting in depth knowledge of the subjects.
