Bangalore: City Dermatologist Dr Ganesh S Pai Addresses Dermacon 2009

Bangalore, Jan 16: Eminent city-based dermatologist Dr  Ganesh S Pai, medical director of Derma-Care, Skin and Cosmetology Centre located in the city spoke on ‘Dermatotherapy in 2050’ at the Dermacon 2009, 37th National Conference of Indian Association of Dermatologists, Venereologists and Leprologists held at Bangalore, attended by about  4000 delegates.

The summary of his speech -'The world of science and medicine are changing and tackling cancer, psoriasis and wound healing would be the  major challenges on hand.  AIDS would probably have been conquered. Vaccines would be developed to treat advanced cancers. Genetic diseases would be treated using chromosome transfer technologies.  Massive hospital resources would be required to manage diseases.  Ageing skin is caused by time and ultra violet destruction.  Newer treatments will be available for more youthful skin.  Cervical cancers in women caused by human papuloma virus would be eliminated by 2050 and the global health care burden would be significantly reduced.

If people live in a godless society with loss of faith, stress levels would lead to a flare up of diseases such as psoriasis.  Doctors would still wrestle with their conscience regarding the ethics of various surgeries.  If we fail to ground dermatology in a string set of moral values, we will suffer loss of public respect.  As doctors, we should maintain willingness in incorporating compassion, competence and humility in our  careers'.
