Mangalore, Dec 11: Police seized counterfeit soap being sold under the brand name of Medimix, from a shop near Central Market on Wednesday December 10. The soap was being passed off for the original product.
Acting on the information provided by B N Prasad, state sales manager, Cholayil Products and Services, Chennai, police raided Sri Rajaram and Co, wholesale dealers. They also arrested shopkeeper Himmath Lal Chowdari in this regard.
According to the police, 220 bars of the counterfeit soap have been seized from the shop. The value of the seized products is Rs 3,080.
Speaking to Daijiworld.com, Prasad said that they had cautioned the shopkeeper two months ago, against selling the fake product. “The soap was being sold at Rs 14 by the shopkeeper. But the actual price has been Rs 15 for the past one and a half year. It has been proved through lab testing, that the soap being sold in the shop is fake”, said Prasad.
Chowdari, meanwhile, claimed that he was totally unaware about the fake product. He said that the soap was bought by salesmen in the shop during his absence. He alleged that they were being cheated by unknown distributors.
A case has been registered at Mangalore North police station. The accused was produced in court.
