Deshmukh Buckles Under Pressure - Offers to Quit

PTI

New Delhi, Dec 1:
After union home minister Shivraj Patil, Maharashtra deputy chief minister R R Patil quit on Monday in the wake of the Mumbai terror  attacks and now chief minister Vilasrao Deshmukh also appears to be on the way out.

"I offered to resign at the meeting of the Congress Working Committee on Saturday," said Maharashtra chief minister Vilasrao Deshmukh

"High Command will decide (on the resignation issue)," he said.

Earlier, highly placed Congress sources said Deshmukh has offered to resign and a decision on it will be taken in a day or two.

The offer comes after the CWC meet attended by Deshmukh on Saturday evening which saw leader after leader emphasising the need to ensure accountability from "higher to lower level".

Party leaders say since the union home minister has resigned at the higher level, the accountability now needs to be fixed at the lower level also and the Chief Minister has to take a call at the earliest.

His deputy R R Patil resigned three days after the terror strikes and his party chief Sharad Pawar has asked the chief minister to accept the resignation.

"We have taken our own decision. It is for them to take their decision," the NCP supremo said when asked whether the chief minister, who belongs to Congress, had also quit.

A Congress leader, who declined to be named, said if either the CM or the deputy CM goes, "the other will have to go because the issue is the same".

A beleaguered Deshmukh landed himself in a fresh controversy yesterday as he visited the terror-hit Taj Mahal hotel along with film producer Ram Gopal Varma and Deshmukh's actor son Reitesh.

The issue was raised at the all-party meeting convened by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh last night which was also attended by Sonia Gandhi with some parties criticising the CM for his "casual" attitude.

Deshmukh recently completed four years in office. The names of union ministers Prithviraj Chavan and Sushil Kumar Shinde are doing the rounds to replace the chief minister and sources say a decision on the successor's name was delaying Deshmukh's resignation.

The name of NCP leader Chagan Bhujbal is doing the rounds for the post of the Deputy CM.

A section of Congress leaders say that strong steps are needed to ensure that the party meant business when it comes to issues of the country's security.

The Maharashtra deputy chief minister, who was in the crosshairs in the wake of the Mumbai terror attacks, resigned earlier today.

"I have submitted my resignation letter to chief minister Vilasrao Deshmukh. I have gone by my conscience and decided to take this step," Patil said.

"I pondered over the issue the whole night yesterday. Finally, I have decided to quit as per my conscience," Patil said.

Patil's resignation follows the exit of the union home minister Shivraj Patil, who put in his papers to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh yesterday, after the Congress Working Committee spoke disapprovingly of the home minister, in light of the Mumbai carnage and other terror strikes in the country.

The Maharashtra deputy chief minister, who was also in charge of the state home ministry, was under severe criticism following the terror attacks with opposition Shiv Sena and BJP demanding his resignation alleging that he failed to handle the situation.

The Congress leadership is annoyed with R R Patil, particularly because of his insensitive remark on Saturday where he sought to play down the enormity of the jihadi atrocity against Mumbai, almost likening it to a routine law and order incident which is common in any big city.

On Saturday, Patil had described the Mumbai carnage as a "small incident" that "can happen in big cities."

Congress has dug their own grave and now rests there. They were against the POTA because it was adopted by the BJP government and congress wanted to show how smart they are by relaxing and turning blind eye on terror. Now the result is there right in front of them and now the panic striken congress dont know where to hide their face. They are ready to accept POTA whatever as they dont find any light in the end of the tunnel. The life and strength of congress is very bleak and has started crumbling like cookies.

Most of the politicians in India are a disgraced lot, to say the least. They say they will serve us till the last of their blood! In that case, why provide them with security? We want to see them shedding their blood. They are enjoying life and luxury at our cost - from our tax money. Alas! this country is filled with bogus politicians and their 'chamchas'.

    Couple of interesting things

    1. There are no criteria set for any cabinet positions, mean any TD&H can be a minister in the vibrant Indian democracy.

    2. Aadil khans comment is interesting but are you seriously paying any tax!! I wonder! Well now you got to say you send a lot hard earned tax free money to India which is so important for the economic growth. I am sure you guys don’t use the “hawala” agent for the exchange purpose if so money your money will be helping not to build but to slap the eco development in India.

     3. Corruption is everywhere in India, not just politician its bollywood too eager to make money, well, they are so intelligent to cover it up. Or is that just taking the opportunity to make some money by doing risky hard work!

    4. Pravin, your comment is so much valid (for my sense) but will never happen in Indian politics. Because even thieves are required for Indian politics to teach them the tactics even though they are poor at certain things are so good at something else.

     5. We, Indian forget things fast and are back to normal life, good to hear this. Eventually we are good at forgetting everything and vote for the same people who are sacked for poor performance. 6. Honestly, My wild presumptions were India would only require a man-day to have complete control over Pakistan. Surprisingly it took 3 days hard fighting against a just handful terrorist.

     7. Lack of intelligent support, lack of political support, lack of care to safe guard the nation. Lack of technology and training to Military…the list will go on. All this can be made if you- the politician wish to…but what about the 200 life!!! What about my family if I was at Mumbai!!! (I am not worth 5 lack rupee but I mean a lot for my family). Things which are disturbing I salute/admire Indian NSG and every one who worked hard to achieve this.

As people say my sarcastic mind doesn’t help me to sort of gasping the final victory. Well, terrorist made it- hard to say the fact. I can’t even imagine my parents having to know I am no more in the world!!! I am sorry Unni Uncle. Deepu will always be with us. End of the day I cry for my nation! How can some one not when you see people cry around you. It’s hard to realize the situation loosing the family. Just thinking why not India secures at least Indian who is with in the country!

The terrorist certainly conveyed a stong and bold message to all the citizens of India that everything is not in GOD's hand, some things are in their hands too! They certainly did an unimaginable damage to our Indian philosophy, psychology, motherland, and most of all to innocent human beings, slaughtered senselessly. MAY GOD DAMN THEM AND THEIR ENTIRE GENERATION AND NATION TILL KINGDOM COMES.

There's simply no humane or spiritual forgiveness for such an act of madness - be it Islamic or otherwise. Our loss in all it's entirety is simply great, and by such mere symbolic acts of resignation of our elected ministers, our country with all it's have's and have not's will certainly not forge ahead of evil. We have now to seriously question our vulnerability, and based on the scope and impact of the present day criminal mind, we have to assert what requires to be acquired (will, skill, and kill power), what requires to be strategised (proactive and agressive), whom to appoint (young talented genius types with hot blood), and how to contain and control (by being on the defensive),any form of local or national goondaism or international terrorism from within our own states or from forces of evil from across any border, be it Indian, Bangaldesh, Pakistan, or Sri Lanka.

We should all remember first to have the will to live as true Indians, in love, understanding, peace and harmony. We are so bloody divided on trival matters such as our state, race, religion, language, and above all our CHALTA HAI and HOTA HAI mentality. We should all believe only in one solid understanding: We are Indians and every inch of India is Ours to live, defend, or to Die!

Fully agree with Mr. Aadil Khan. Truly, this is a waste of our money, used mostly for their comforts and luzuries. Desmukh was seen on TV with his guards and can one tell, for how long he stayed? Did he show his feelings to the suffering? Shame, shame and shame.

Deshmukh please resign. No one wants to hear anything from you. Everyone is waiting for you to resign before you are thrown out. Its better you go on your own before getting thrown. Enough is enough. There is no need to wait for CWC meeting.

Resigning any post is not important? People should ask him why he is willing to resign. That means he is resigning just to show people and make people fool, they should be punished because they didn’t do their job properly..Isn’t??? Even prime minster also responsible for the country.. Don’t simply travel/ or attend functions with lots of security guard spending public money..

Common it's simple, we need to have good police force/ good policies, good law and order, good qualified young politions who are aware about market/business/ common peoples need.... example offer a good salary to police officers, commandos. Also offer them good facility/ training c good education/training/ equipments, definitely they will save our country at any level as well people, now because of poor encouragement from the government they have to go for corruption...isn’t? that’s wht happened in recent Bombay attack/…….

Mr. Deshmukh must leave the post. His recent visit to Taj accompanying actor son and Director, Ram Gopal Verma was not for assessing the damage to the structure rather for developing a story plot for a new film and fix an important role in the movie for his son. These politicians are inhuman and merciless. With our tax money, they enjoy the life, buy security protection while the honest jawans and police officials lay their life for the country . I would say a new law should be enacted which should curtail extra luxuries to politicians. Our tax money will be saved to a great extent.
