Mangalore, Nov 12: The Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) Passengers’ Service Committee on Wednesday November 12, asked district in-charge minister J Krishna Palemar to take a firm stand on nationalization of bus routes in Dakshina Kannada.

Welcoming the state government’s initiative to introduce KSRTC bus service in the district, the committee said it would create employment opportunities for about 3,000 people. Addressing media persons, P Keshava, honorary president of the committee, said KSRTC would provide better facilities than private buses. Students’ passes, monthly passes, daily passes, accident relief insurance, and other such facilities will attract passengers to government buses, he said.

Workers of private buses have no employment guarantee even though thee buses have been plying in the area for several decades. Employees have been deprived of facilities as specified in the rules of the department of employees, said Keshava.

Hanumanta Kamath, president, Nagarika Hitharaksana Vedike, said, "We want KSRTC buses on every route at any cost. Minister Palemar should have a firm stand on nationalization of bus routes. He should support transport minister R Ashok’s decision instead of delivering differing statements."

Srinivas Prabhu, Dharmendra, Nagesh P, Anand Haleyangady, Jayarama, Sanjiv Kanchan, and Sunder Naik, were present at the press meet.

The problem is not that Private buses are good/bad and Gov't buses are bad/good. The problem is Private operators were not managed properly. Private operators could have been forced to contribute a share of their profits to a fund that went towards building good bus stand or shelters, maintain the roads, subsidize low profit routes and provide passes to seniors and students.

There also should have been penalties for no-show as some buses scheduled repairs and maintenance during low profit afternoon hours. It was a good idea that turned out to be a run-away-freight train with no control procedures in place.

The Government should also ensure the safety of the employees mainly drivers and conductors running KSRTC buses. Many times it has been observed that the private bus operators would block the KSRTC buses deliberately or bring their buses too close to the KSRTC bus and block the movement or refusing to give side etc.and various such dirty tricks.Such problems will arise if both KSRTC and private buses operate concurrently.

We are not against private bus services operating in Mangalore. But the way the bus drivers run the buses risking the pedestrians, two wheelers, autorickshaws life in danger is not at all acceptable. By invited KSRTC bus in the Mangalore city limits is most required need as this is the only option available so that the private bus owners and drivers will improve their safety driving.

Healthy competition is always good for society and monopoly is bad. Waiting from KSRTC when they will start services within Mangalore city.

Dear Minister , kindly introduce KSRTC buses in all routes of Mangalore without any more politics. We are fed up of the rude behaviour of the private bus staff and their dangerous driving habits to overtake buses belonging to rival agency.

Also many a time they terminate the trip at their wish short of the destinations if the passengers are less in numbers or they are late for the next trip.In such cases they hardly bother for the poor passengers. It is right time to have a change in the system.
