Mangalore: KRV to Strive for Inclusion of Tulu in Eighth Schedule

Mangalore, Nov 6: T A Narayana Gowda, state president, Karnataka Rakshana Vedike (KRV), announced his support for inclusion of Tulu in the eighth schedule of the Indian Constitution, on Thursday November 6.

Addressing members of KRV at ceremony celebrating the awarding of classical status to Kannada, held in front of the district commissioner’s (DC) office, he said that he does not seek any discrimination between Kannada and Tulu. Tulu is one of the rich dialects of the state which has obtained national and international recognition through Tulu-speakers across the world, said Gowda.

He said, ‘KRV will support Tulu language activists in the movement to find a spot in the eighth schedule of the Indian Constitution. Tulu meets all requirements to be enlisted in the schedule.’ He added that asking special status for any language is a right of those people and the government cannot deny them.

‘Classical status for Kannada is a victory for the movement started by litterateur D Jaware Gowda, a long time ago. KRV expresses its gratitude to all the writers, journalists, and other supporters, who were involved in the struggle. It will move forward with the mission of enriching Kannada,’ Gowda added.

Earlier, Ramakrishna Achar Palthady, chairman, Tulu Sahitya Academy, had asked Gowda and his organization to extend their support to the struggle for inclusion of Tulu in the eighth schedule. Pradip Kumar Kalkura, president, district Kannada Sahitya Parishat, writers Muhammad Baddur, Jayathi Bangera, as well as political leaders Hamid Kandak, and Monappa Bandary spoke on the occasion. Sanoor Sathish Salian was also present.
