Udupi, Oct 15: The local court has remanded two persons, arrested in connection with the murder of Jyoti alias Ramya (22) from Nittoor in the city outskirts, to three days of police custody. The mortal remains of Jyoti, found in skeletal form, which were buried at Aralimath near Teerthahalli, were exhumed on Monday October 13 and inquest was conducted.

Sandeep from Teerthahalli and Devaraj from Devanahalli have been arrested so far in the case, while main accused Suresh alias Soori from Bangalore, is reportedly absconding. As already reported, the police suspect that Jyoti was murdered in the last week of March this year at Bangalore and that her body was then shifted to the above village for being disposed off in the forest land.

Jyoti, who had gone to Bangalore about 30 months ago, had visited her native place here in February this year and her last telephonic call to her home was on March 22, it is learnt. Her mother Baby Poojarthi had filed a complaint with the local town police station, about her mysterious disappearance.

Jyoti, who was working in a fishnet company in Nittoor, started loving a mechanic from Ambalpady but her family firmly resisted the relationship. Later, she joined a cassette shop at Kalsanka in the city, on the recommendation of a woman and a man named Vadiraj. Is is said that these two persons later secured her a job at Bangalore, on the pretext that the salary she used to earn in Udupi was very meager.

They left her with Suresh (30) alias Soori, a native of Koppa and resident of Vidyaranyapura in Bangalore, who had connection with the flesh trade. After his attempt to drag her to prostitution failed, he is said to have promised to marry her. She had informed her mother that she did not face any problems, and that Suresh would marry her. Even when her mother had gone to Bangalore along with Jyoti, Suresh said that he would marry Jyoti.

It is said that initially, the policemen both in Udupi and Bangalore were reluctant to register her complaint about her missing daughter, but relented after Baby Poojarthi met the then in-charge superintendent of police R Dileep and gave him a complaint and endorsed a copy thereof to home minister Dr Acharya. After the minister instructed the concerned, Srinivas Raju, inspector of the district crime intelligence bureau took over the investigation.

The skull and bones recovered during the disinterring operation, conducted in the presence of the mother of Jyoti and other close relatives, have been sent for laboratory tests. Further investigations are on.

It is learnt that Sureh had given a house and gold ornaments to Jyoti. As Jyoti protested when she was asked to give them back, differences of opinion arose, and Suresh is learnt to have murdered her by smothering her, in the presence of the two arrested persons. The body was then loaded on to a car in a gunny bag and buried in a place located about 13 kms away from the main road near Teerthahalli, in a place belonging to the forest department.
