Maharashtra Govt to Legalise Live-in relationships

Press Trust India

MUMBAI, Oct 9: In a bold step to "legalise" live-in relationships, Maharashtra cabinet on Wednesday approved a proposal suggesting a woman involved in such a relationship for a "reasonable period" should get the status of a wife.

The proposal is based on recommendations of the Justice Mallimath Committee which said if a man and a woman are living together as husband and wife for a reasonably long period, the man shall be deemed to have married the woman according to customary rights of either party.

The committee had also mooted that the definition of the word 'wife' under Section 125 of the CrPc, be amended to include a woman, living with the man like his wife for a reasonably long period.

The proposal was passed at a meeting of the state cabinet, chaired by Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh.

According to Section 125 of the CrPc, the woman would even be entitled to alimony, an official said.

As CrPC is in the concurrent list of the Central Government, the cabinet proposal would be sent to the Centre for obtaining President's assent, the official said.

Have been always proud of our Indian culture and boast about it here in the western world. What a shame for India and we Indians equally. I wonder now why is Shiv sena quiet on this issue? When they create such havoc on valentines day saying that is a western culture. Isn’t live-in relationship a western culture too?

I strongly condemn the step to "legalise" live-in relationship by Government of Maharashtra. When sacred mariages are falling apart due to incompatibilty between the partners, live in relationship would create more social tensions . Why ape western countires. Marriages are made in heaven lets stick to that.

End of Marriage? No. It will remain, but live-in status helps women who can get out of unwanted relationship with some legal protection. It's good because it helps man and woman understand each other and live or part with a smile and a goodbye rather than women getting burnt alive by mom in law and hubby.

Don't talk of "our culture" as it's a great thing. Think of the domestic violence, the silent scream, and the chest-beating puritans will stop talking of our culture. Well done, Maharashtra, and great, Deshmukh.

Why is everyone angry with "live in" relationships - when divorce is ok. India is a democracy - we all have a right to live in freedom. Its the 21st century guys - wake up.

It would appear, some of the Indians take great pride in aping the west. In doing so, they often go overboard and make it look unnatural, e.g. rolling of the “r”s. We have our identity and let us be proud of it ! Monogamy is the best for a harmoneous and peaceful Society.

Granted, there are always a few pitfalls in marriage which lead to failure, but that does not make legalisation of this sort of idea better. In fact, this will destroy the moral code of our hitherto wise Society, and , the States that follow this new scheme will face untold legal problems. Suicides will increase – yes, Sati will, in effect, return after Government efforts to eradicate it for so many years.

What a pity!. I say, why is it that our Indian Society imitate the West in the mistakes they make and maladies they suffer from, but not the good things they do ? For instance, why don’t we stop littering and spitting here and there, form queues, follow road rules - giving pedestrians the right of way and so forth ? If we must learn something foreign, let it be from the Chinese: They never compromise on any of their traditional wisdom, no matter where they live !

All the marriages are either "civil" or "criminal". "Civil" marriages do not cost much whether solemnised before a registrar or before a religious person. They become "criminal" because of the people competing with each other to show off their wealth and social status. Those who cannot afford to compete live together as husband and wife which the ancient scriptures called Gandharva Vivaha. Well, when people around them recognise them as husband and wife why not the government? As long as we do not have "civilised" marriages in our society the poor will live in "sin"!

The other term for "live in" is "legalized prostitution" nothing better than that in a country where marriage is sacred and respected you want to promote a live in relationship. they do not understand the simple thing as -living with the man LIKE his wife for a reasonably long period. living with the man AS his wife for a reasonably long period. LIKE is used when reference is made to animals not human beings it is difficult to understand the law and now the law makers and the law upholders of this country you ban petty crimes like Bar Dancers and legalese LIVE IN keep it up what next the next time your are caught in prostitutions tell the cop that you are STARTING A LIVE IN RELATIONSHIP AND THIS THE THE BEGINNING OF THE "reasonable period" Where does this period start and end .........

This is Shamefull to the goverment as well as the people to india, which has its great culture , If this can be the law than there will be similar laws like this like: If a person take cares of a child for reasonable time than child becomes his, than what if women is forced to keep relationship for many days than one day she becomes wife than even if she wants to come out legally also she will not be able to , lot of disadvatages due to this law.

Guys let us first understand the very fundamentals behind every live in relationship as it's widely privalent in most of the indian metros...partners are comfortable living together sharing everything but "marriage" is not even in their wildest dreams...it's an altogether new generation of youth...daijiworld should focus on the comments of today's youth...our government should focus on other priorities of the masses and not on legalising live in relationships etc.

I think it is right step towards safe gaurding the relationship between woman and man but how long is the reasonable time and who will determine the time factors. I am sure it is an opportunity for trial and error anlysis. What will one call the love child?????. The positive step is here the entitlement for alimony one will think before start living about aliimony.

Do we require this "live-in relationships", Don't you think it is wrong in the eyes of GOD. Marriage is a sacred relation between two people. If these kind of relations are legalised, hereafter there won't be any value for relationships. So, think several times before passing such proposals. Additional in this case lady is given status of WIFE, what is the meaning of all these?

Mr. Sequira, I guess they have already made it legal for hard core criminals to become ministers, look at Shibu Soren as example. I am not against govt to bring legalization of live-in relation, but is it required in India? we have our own customs, traditions, what about them? My urge to the govt is not to let these traditions of our country just disappear like that by legalizing western culture in India.

This is a shame. What next ?? Legalise homosexuality, prostitution...why don't they legalise the entry of hard core criminals into the govenrment also?? They think if by copying the west that India will prosper , sadly they are mistaken. God save our country and the youth & children as well.
