Live updates on H D Kumaraswamy's swearing-in ceremony

This page will refresh every few minutes

10.15 pm: BJP leader and former CM B S Yeddyurappa slams Kumaraswamy for holding his first press meet as the new CM without deputy CM Dr Parameshwara speaking.

"Mr. CM, in the very first press conference of your coalition govt, you did not allow your partner Dy CM G. Parameshwara to utter a single word. This only shows that you do not have faith in your coalition partner. What can the people expect from such an unholy alliance?" Yeddyrappa tweeted.

10 pm: Kumaraswamy meets JD(S) MLAs for dinner. Thanks them for being united and apologises for keeping them in hotels and resorts over the past one week.

7.30 pm: Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulates new Karnataka chief minister H D Kumaraswamy and deputy CM Dr Parameshwara and wishes them the best. "I congratulate Shri @hd_kumaraswamy Ji and @DrParameshwara Ji on taking oath as Chief Minister and Deputy Chief Minister of Karnataka. My best wishes for their tenure ahead," he tweeted.

In return, chief minister H D Kumaraswamy thanks PM Narendra Modi for the wishes: "My heartfelt thanks to you PM @narendramodi ji for the wishes. I have full faith in our federal system and I am there with you on all development-oriented issues. I also seek your full cooperation in developing Karnataka into a model state."

7.15 pm: After press meet, Kumaraswamy proceeds to resort to meet MLAs.

6.10 pm: "There is absolutely no conflict between the Congress and the JD(S). Some media have reported about unhappiness among some leaders like D K Shivakumar. I want to say, there is no such thing. Nobody has any problem. Dr Parameshwara is a senior leader and I will seek his guidance. I urge media, if you have any doubts about anything, approach me for clarification, my office will be open 24 hours": Kumaraswamy

6.04 pm: "We have the blueprint ready for loan waiver for farmers. With the support of Congress leaders, we will give a government that is stable, and one that will ensure peace and prosperity in the state. We will strive to give an administration that is a model for the entire country": Kumaraswamy

5.59 pm: "Some media reported that I will not waive farmers' loans. That is false. What I said was, in an alliance I alone cannot take the decision. I said I would have waived off the loans within 24 hours if JD(S) had got majority and formed the government. I need to take every step carefully": Kumaraswamy

5.58 pm: "I will continue the people-friendly schemes of the previous Congress government and also strive hard to fulfill the promises made in our manifestos": Kumaraswamy

5.56 pm: "The uniting of prominent political leaders on one stage for my swearing-in ceremony is historic and unprecedented": Kumaraswamy

5.50 pm: "BJP is talking of morality and immorality. I don't understand it and I do not want to talk about it. Everyone's question is whether this alliance will last. I want to say, we will together give a stable government to the state and will respond to the problems of the people": Kumaraswamy

5.46 pm: "I thank Congress president Rahul Gandhi, Congress leaders Sonia Gandhi, Ghulam Nabi Azad, Ashok Gehlot, K C Venugopal, Dr Parameshwara, Siddaramaiah, Mallikarjuna Kharge, D K Shivakumar and others for their support to JD(S) and to me": Kumaraswamy

5.43 pm: "I thank and appreciate the media for giving minute-by-minute updates of the political developments in Karnataka over the last one week": Kumaraswamy

5.41 pm: Kumaraswamy addresses first press meet as new chief minister.

5.40 pm: Union home minister Rajnath Singh wishes Kumaraswamy on Twitter: "Congratulations to Shri HD Kumaraswamy and Shri G Parameshwar on taking oath as the Chief Minister and Deputy Chief Minister of Karnataka. I hope, Karnataka will move forward towards peace, progress and prosperity under the new Govt (sic)."

5.25 pm: Congress MLAs return to Hilton hotel by bus directly after the ceremony.

5.15 pm: Leaders proceed to Banquet Hall for tea.

4.44 pm: Soon after the ceremony, all prominent leaders gathered to greet the crowds, in a show of national opposition strength.

4.40 pm: Ceremony ends with National Anthem.

4.35 pm: Congress leader Dr G Parameshwara takes oath as deputy chief minister of Karnataka.

4.27 pm: Mayawati and Sonia Gandhi seen holding hands and exchanging greetings.

4.24 pm: Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi accompanied by Congress Karnataka in-charge K C Venugopal arrive on stage. Andhra chief minister Chandrababu Naidu also arrives. Former CM Siddaramaiah and Congress leader Mallikarjuna Kharge also present.

4.22 pm: D K Shivakumar greeted by loud cheers by crowds. Thousands gathered at the venue.

4.17 pm: H D Kumaraswamy arrives along with Dr Parameshwara. Both greet Akhilesh, Mayawati and others. Mamata Banerjee also arrives on stage.

4.15 pm: Minutes away from swearing-in ceremony. Dignitaries arrive at venue. Akhilesh Yadav, Sharad Yadav, Deve Gowda, Mayawati and others on stage.

3.40 pm: Congress leaders Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, Mallikarjuna Kharge, Siddaramaiah, Dr Parameshwar and others also on their way to Vidhana Soudha. Stuck in traffic jam owing to rains.

3.30 pm: JD(S) supremo Deve Gowda leaves for Vidhana Soudha for his son's swearing-in ceremony. His other family members are also on the way in seven cars.

3.15 pm: "You did not succumb to fear of IT and ED raids, and you contested the elections and won. The political atmosphere in India has begun to change. We need to ensure that our united opposition does not face any setback," Sonia Gandhi tells Congress MLAs at hotel Hilton.

3.10 pm: JD(S) MLAs leave for Vidhana Soudha by bus.

2.50 pm: Ahead of the swearing-in ceremony, Congress leader and trouble-shooter D K Shivakumar rubbished reports that he was unhappy about not being given the deputy CM's post. "No one is unhappy. We are celebrating that our government is coming in power. I never said that I am an aspirant for the chief minister or the deputy chief minister post. All is well," he said.

2.49 pm: Actor-turned-politician Kamal Haasan, who had earlier said he may skip the ceremony as he had to visit Tuticorin where violence erupted during anti-Sterlite protests, is now on his way to Bengaluru after visiting Tuticorin.

2.40 pm: Heavy rain in Bengaluru threatens to hamper swearing-in ceremony. Most JD(S) and Congress workers who had gathered at the Vidhana Soudha ahead of the ceremony run for cover, while some celebrate in the rain.

2.35 pm: Trinamool Congress supremo Mamata Banerjee told reporters, "Jo hamse takrayega, chur chur ho jayega (Whoever dares to fight with us will be decimated)." She also said the swearing-in is an important event for democracy and an opportunity to strengthen regional parties.

2.30 pm: With two hours to go for H D Kumaraswamy's swearing-in as chief minister and Dr Parameshwara's as deputy chief minister, prominent leaders from across the country have arrived in Bengaluru to witness the cermeony.

Andhra Pradesh chief minister N Chandrababu Naidu, who arrived on Wednesday afternoon extended his solidarity for a grand opposition alongwith West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee. Speaking to reporters, Naidu said, "In the future, we will work together (with Congress-JDS) to promote national interest. We are here to strengthen all regional parties."

Samajwadi Party leader Akhilesh Yadav, CPI(M) leader Sitharam Yechury, Congress president Rahul Gandhi and Sonia Gandhi are also in the city. Rahul Gandhi and Sonia Gandhi were received at the airport by former chief minister Siddaramaiah.
