Bangalore: Language Policy - Supreme Court Upholds HC Verdict

Daijiworld Media Network - Bangalore (SP)

Bangalore, Aug 30: The state government's efforts to put its language policy on a firm footing by extracting a stay order from the Supreme Court for the state High Court verdict, has come to naught. The three-member bench of the supreme court headed by Chief Justice K G Balakrishnan, at the hearing of the special leave petition filed against the High Court judgement by the government on Friday August 29, refused to consider the government's pleas for issuing a stay order.

The court ordered issuance of notices to managements of private unaided schools in the state, to respond to the SLP within three weeks. President of Karnataka Unaided Schools Management Association G S Sharma said that the association will study the petition and respond to it suitably. He expressed the belief that the court will not come in the way of the liberty the parents enjoy as far as choosing the kind of education and medium of instruction their wards need to have.

Earlier, the High Court had upheld the right of the private unaided schools in the state to choose the medium of the instruction of their liking, duly quashing a part of the government order making it compulsory for the schools to adopt Kannada as the medium of instruction.

It is victory for the secular fabrics of India. I agree with Mr Alfred Rebello in his views. If we keep quiet now, tomorrow BJP led government in the state may issue orders to say that all unaided and private schools should paint their school in safron and hoist safron flag and the uniforms for the academics to be safron. Justice has prevailed and we have high hopes in the judiciary of India

Chief Minister’s daughter herself told in an interview that her father is getting Hindi tuitions and that he has to improve his English. I would like to ask one question to our Chief Minister, “Do you want everyone to go for tuition when they reach your age? Or are you embarrassed when someone talks to you in Hindi or English?

How can you put restrictions on private unaided schools?” Parents are the one to decide about their children’s education and not the ministers, mind it.

Those who voted BJP to power should support the BJP's action and send their children only to Kannada medium schools. But BJP has no right to force any institution to follow what they say. Every individual knows what is good for him. BJP is taking our individual right by forcing us to do what they think without realizing how it will affect ones career. As I said before, slowly by slowly BJP's colours are coming out.
