M'lore: Derecognition Threat - KMC Determined to Fight Out the Uncertainty

Mangalore, Aug 27: The recommendaion made by the the Medical Council of India(MCI) to the union health ministry to derecognize the medical education courses run by Kasturba Medical College(KMC), have been giving anxious moments to the students of KMC and their parents alike, about the future in store for them. Through a common letter addressed to the parents of all the students, KMC Mangalore dean C V Raghuvir has tried to drive home the point, that the KMC colleges have been complying with all the requirements set out by the government and that the recommendations made are not based on actual facts.

In the letter, the dean has said, that this menace has to be fought unitedly and urged the parents to make use of their good offices to impress upon the government of India through every possible means, to convince them about their perception of excellence of education being provided at KMC Mangalore, for strengthening the hands of the college management.

The letter dated August 8, is meant to apprise them of the developments related with the status of recognition of KMC Mangalore. He has said, that the allegation made by the MCI that the college suffers from shortage of faculty members and residents was unfounded. The MCI has not taken into account faculty on deputation and leave. The committee of inspectors appointed by the union health ministry has since vindicated our stand, the letter explains.

About the other point raised by MCI about using the government Wenlock and Lady Goschen hospitals in the city for clinical facilities and training students, he has stated, that it was being done as per the government's permission given in the year 1952.  The college admits students selected through the Karnataka CET process in return for utilising these hospitals, he has clarified.

Inspite of clarifications provided, the MCI has recommended to the union health ministry to derecognise the college. We are concerned with the uncertainty this recommendation has placed on the functioning of a prestigeous institution which has been functioning since the last 53 years, he has said in the letter.

    I agree. It smells fishy. Of over a dozen MBBS colleges recognzied by MCI that I visited in India, nothing comes close to the infrastucture and facilities of KMC. KMC does have world class facilities and if the Govt. of India want to participate in the global economy and competition, it should encourage institutions like KMC.

    Let meritocracy prevail and KMC's reputation is well known and appreciated by people throughout the world. This is a disgrace to the way our politicians are handling this, by hiding behind MCI.

    The union health ministry should take cognizance of the fact that consistently KMC has been listed among the top 10 medical colleges in India over so many years and while young medical colleges with doubtful infrastructure have been gaining favour with the MCI an institute which has revolutionised private medical education as far back as 1952 being threatened of derecognition smells fishy somewhere.
