Mangalore: RTO Issues Warning to Auto Drivers against Misbehaviour

Daijiworld Media Network-Mangalore (TU/SP)

Mangalore, Aug 8: Regional Transport Officer D Sadashiva has warned the autorickshaw drivers of cancelling their licences in case they misbehave with the passengers.

He has informed in a release, that the department will take stringent action against the errant drivers, whenever complaints are received by his office against them regarding either demanding exorbitant hire charges or misbehaviour with the passengers.

There have been complaints that some autorickshaw drivers have been collecting excessive hire charges from the passengers even after the recent revision in the auto fare. It is said that auto drivers who operate from Hampankatta, Mangalore Road railway station, Central Railway Station and from near the bus stand have been involved in this racket. Some of the drivers have also been found to be collecting more fare from the tourists who come from neighbouring states and districts, he revealed.

Sadashiva said that such activities cannot be tolerated, as it will tarnish the image of the local auto drivers themselves in addition to that of the district administration. The last date to adopt revised fare in autorickshaw meters is August 24. The last date will not be extended further for any reason, he asserted.

I travel regularly by auto rickshaws especially, early mornings, when I am on my way back from Bangalore. I have hardly come across any auto rickshaw driver who speaks politely. This is the least we can expect from them as it does not cost them money to do so. More often they ask for a lump sum charge which is more than double the normal charge.Or else, their meters are fixed and we end up paying more than double. There were occasions, when they are very rude and even come threatening close to us as if they will fight and take away what they want.In such a small city with so few autos it should not be too much of a problem to get them to fall in line. Its high time authorities intervene. Henceforth, I will put down the auto numbers here in this blog.

If the RTO is really serious about doing something about this very real problem, he will be doing a great service to every railway passenger who lands in Mangalore, especially in the early hours. The harassement you face has to be experienced to be believed. It would be a good experience if one of your reporters could be at the station in the morning.

At last the RTO has woken up. But how will he curb this as an advocate is involved in this association. Recently I travelled from Kadri Coconut garden to Kankanady Pumpwell circle. The driver demanded 15 rupees stating that increase in fuel price. If RTO is ready to take action, I shall give the number of the vehicle. Hope RTO will respond to this.
