Mangalore, Jul 26: Minister of state for Labour and Employment Oscar Fernandes, at a meeting with the district deputy commissioner, other officials and representatives of non-governmental organizations held in the city on Friday July 25 said, that the union government is actively considering a proposal of the district for the establishment of an Overseas Workers Training Resource Centre here, to cater to the technical needs of the people going abroad for employment.

Oscar said, he would discuss the issue with the union minister for overseas affairs Vayalar Ravi and expressed the confidence of convincing him to do the needful, as a city like Mangalore which is fast developing with lot of people having connections with foreign countries, is a right place for housing the said centre.

People going abroad for jobs without proper technical knowledge, get trapped in various problems. Some kind of training can greatly enhance their prospects. Such a centre can also act as a counselling forum for the people employed abroad who are facing problems because of deficient technical knowledge, the minister felt.

The officials informed that the city is eligible to get a full-fledged passport office and a proposal is already with the ministry of external affairs for the same. He promised to follow up the issue with the ministry.

When the minister invited suggestions for improving the skill development mission of the union government, ITI principal Giridhar Salian said there is scope for improving soft skills of ITI students. The minister thought it advisable to conduct a survey of the category-wise employment opportunities before taking up the job of training people in respective faculties.
