Mangalore: University to Conduct In-depth Study on Fishermen

Mangalore, Jun 18: Konaji-based Mangalore University is all set to set up 'Ambigara Chowdaiah Adhyayana Peeta' for studying the challenges and problems being faced by the fishermen community of the twin districts and north Karnataka. It has received a grant of Rs 50 lac from the state governmenet for the purpose.

Addressing the academic council of the university held at the New Senate hall on Tuesday June 17, vice-chancellor K M Kaveriappa outlined the scope of the Peeta as undertaking studies on the historic,cultural, social and economic aspects of the fishermen. The university has also plans of setting up a documentation centre, a library and museum about the fishermen of the region.

In addition, the university has also received a grant of one crore rupees for setting up of 'Kanakadasa Research Centre' for the dissemination of Kanakadasa philosophy. A Kanakadasa Peeta is already functional in the university.

The council decided to include a special paper on 'economics of insurance' at the post graduation level for MA (Economics) and another special paper on 'stochastic finance' for M Com course. The university has also approved a new 'MBA Executive' course for working professionals for which classes for working professionals will be held on Saturday and Sunday at the university college in the city. lt has even approved a 'Medicinal Chemistry' course as proposed by SDM College Ujire.
