Udupi: 97,000 New EPICs Issued in District

Udupi, May 6: Deputy Commissioner P. Hemalatha said on Saturday that 97,000 new voter identity cards had been issued in Udupi district.

Addressing presspersons here, Ms. Hemalatha said that 6.8 lakh people (85 per cent) in the district now had electors’ photo identity cards (EPICs). The number of voters in the district had increased from 7.59 lakh to 7.65 lakh after the revision of the voters’ list.

Photographing

Arrangements had been made to take photographs of voters for the five Assembly constituencies in the three taluk headquarters of the district from May 4 to May 10.

Observers

Voters could produce any of the 19 documents specified by the Election Commission to cast their vote. As many as 671 micro-observers had been appointed in the district.

These observers would submit their reports to election observers, she said.

The election observers appointed by the Election Commission for the five Assembly constituencies are: S.S. Rajvi for Byndoor, Pratapsingh Gusain for Kundapur, Kumar Arvind Singh Deo for Udupi, Narayan Prasad Das for Kaup and R.R. Chauan for Karkala.

The expenditure observer for Udupi district is Prem Chand Varma. One complaint each of poll violation had been reported from Udupi and Karkala on May 3.

Complaints

In all, 53 complaints of poll violations had been reported in the district, of which 20 had been disposed, eight rejected, and the rest pending. One criminal case had been filed for tying a banner at Nempu and Hattiangady in Byndoor constituency.

Criminal case

A criminal case had been registered against zilla panchayat of Byndoor division for undertaking the construction of a road at Alur village, Ms. Hemalatha said.

Raids

The Excise Department had conducted 73 raids and seized 747 litres of alcohol and 105 litres of spirit, valued at Rs. 2 lakh.

Vehicles seized

One mini lorry, one car and a motorcycle, which were used for illegally carrying the alcohol and spirit, had also been seized, the Deputy Commissioner said.
