Udupi, Apr 20: The two-day Manipal Media Students’ Convention 08 (MMSC’08) concluded with a grand valedictory ceremony held  at the Chaitya hall in Manipal near here on Saturday April 19.
 
Speaking on the topic ‘The need for public service broadcasting:-regulations in broadcasting,’ Mukesh Sharma, the former regional director of Doordarshan declared “Broadcasting has several unique influences on society. Such as those on its value system, social norms, interpersonal behaviour and cultural identity. Given the perceived if not proven impact of broadcasting, especially on such important and sensitive issues, governments around the world have sought to regulate broadcasting.”

“Journalism itself has undergone many significant changes in the past few decades. Convergence has peeped into the field of journalism.  If you compare personal computer with a television, you can easily say that while PC is an information tool, TV is mainly for entertainment and relaxation, still convergence will intrude here also,” he pointed out.
 
Paranjoy Guha Thakurtha, ex-chief of CNBC and honorary director of school of convergence who was the chief guest for the ceremony. At the start of the second day of convention Kiran Jonnalganda and Nishant Shah discussed about the internet content and topics like ‘Database Vs Narrative’. This was followed by a workshop by Dr. Sandhya Rao on internet content writing.
 
The Convention ended with a cultural program which included some dance and song performances by the students of Manipal Institute of Communication. Winners of the podcast were awarded token gifts and the experts were felicitated with momentos during the valedictory ceremony.
 
Jayant Shakal, Ashish Suri, Priyam Malhotra , Kenney Jacob, Karthik Kastury and Akshay N R  were the members of the team that won the best podcasting team award. Shravan Kokroo from Jaypee, Noida was adjudged the best speaker. Top MU officials were present on the occasion.
