Mangalore, Apr 19: After protests from various quarters, it is now the turn of children to come forward to show their resistance against Mangalore Special Economic Zone (MSEZ) which is proposed to be set up in Permude, Kuttettur, Tenkar and Delantabettu. The children of these villages staged protest against MSEZ on Saturday, April 19 evening, in association with Students’ Islamic Organization junior associate circle.

The children urged that 2035 acres of land where the work on second phase of MSEZ is proposed to begin, should be de-notified immediately and their right to live in the natural environment should also be preserved.

The children also expressed concern that they will lose their natural playgrounds like paddy fields, lakes and rivers where they take bath and enjoy swimming. One cannot value these natural assets in terms of money. Therefore, natural gifts like hills, rivers, forests, fields should be preserved by de-notifying the proposed land, the children demanded.

Soujanya, Deepak, Jenevi, Hashima and others led this protest.

The village upbringing has given me enough insight to the lives of farming community and dignity of labour vis-à-vis our traditional family occupation in agriculture but this type of approach is gradually diminishing in our younger generation.

We need to instil those values in our younger generation and focus on farming to achieve self reliance on food generation. Prices for essential commodities are rising and hence, it is a wake up call for all of us to put our minds and hearts together with a view to influence our younger generation on agriculture oriented activities.
