Kerala HC orders reopening of liquor outlets

Thiruvananthapuram, Jun 1 (DHNS): The Kerala High Court has ordered reopening of beer and wine parlours and state-run liquor retail outlets on the 173-km Thiruvananthapuram-Cherthala road in Alappuzha district, saying that it is not a national highway.

The outlets were closed following the Supreme Court order. The excise department’s clearance for reopening the outlets is likely to be implemented over the next couple of days.

In April, the Kerala High Court had passed an interim order stating that the road was not part of National Highway 66.

The court was considering petitions by a group of bar owners, who argued that the apex court order, which banned liquor outlets along state and national highways, was not applicable to their properties.
