Crackdown on VVIP culture : Modi bans red beacons for central govt ministers, officials

New Delhi, Apr 19 (Agencies) : The Narendra Modi government has taken a major decision to end the VIP culture in India.

The government has ordered a ban on red beacons from 1st May, according to the TV reports. The decision was taken at the cabinet meeting on Wednesday. According to the reports by Times Now and India Today, only five category officials: Prime Minister, President, Vice-President, Chief Justice of India and the Lok Sabha speaker will be allowed to use the red beacons after the decision is implemented.

Even though the Prime Minister of India will have the privilege to use the red beacon light, according to the reports by India Today, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has decided not to use it himself as it will set an example for others. PM Modi had cleared his vision for a transparent government many times and the latest step is a step closer to it.

Earlier, the newly appointed Chief Minister of Punjab Captain Amarinder Singh also abolished the use of red beacons in the state as promised by his party during the election campaign. Last month, the Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath ordered that no minister in the state will be allowed to use the red beacons atop vehicles. He took this decision one day after swearing-in as the new CM of the state.

Whether red beacons for VVIP vehicles are abolished or not, please ensure that ambulances and private emergency vehicles carrying patients are allowed to pass without hindrances.

It is high time all "Jan Sevaks" throughout India give up their ego and false prestige, and sincerely and humbly work for the people of India, for whose sake/service they have been elected/selected.

"Lal Batti Culture" is not only not suitable to India, but totally disgusting/repulsive.

    This is 3 years late, but still a positive move. However, the end to VVIP culture must be absolute and;
    - There should no longer be police barricades on roads that block other vehicle movements.
    - If the minister travels with a police escort, the police van will not use their lal beacons or use sirens. They will move will the normal traffic.
    - No minister will travel inside a police, ambulance or emergency vehicle to circumvent the law.

I think the crackdown on VVIP culture has started, but would still recommend that only the PM and CMs should be allowed to use the beacons as they are functional head of governments.

This is a copy cat Govt. All the schemes initaiated by this Govt were already in vouge by the previous Govt's only with new nomenclature and Cess added to burden the common man. He is now copying what the Chief Minister of Punjab Arminder Singh has done in Punjab after being elected the Chief Minister to discard the Beacon Culture.

The AAP effect has now been copied by the Central government.

Although the Central Government has not achieved anything noteworthy so far, I must congratulate the Central Government for its willingness to copy the lead taken by the AAP.

AAP has opened the eyes of many Indians.

AAP showed the courage and conviction to question some terrible behaviour Indians had developed during the colonial days, and continued all through the Independent years.

Hopefully, the next move should be to stop calling the judges with special addresses, and standing in the judges' presence. This is a colonial custom, which is deeply humiliating to the persons in the court.

The judges (and Indians generally) need to realise that the judges are there to judge an action *or the lack of it) by a person, and NOT the person.

So, for the persons to feel automatically guilty in front of the judges should be stopped.

Are these the priorities of an elected national govt? This looks like a PR stunt to cover up major issues.

This govt has failed to deliver what it had promised during elections. There is no trace of generating 2 crore jobs per year, building 100 smart cities, providing aid to Farmers, building 10 lac houses for the poor, Improving sanitation.

Crackdown on VVIP culture is good...... This VVIP rule was made by British but for the benefit of some people this is continued. I saw in Dubai and except Ambulances, fire-brigade , police no one is allowed to use red beacons. Even our rulers are not using red beacons and they use ordinary cars without beacons and they follow all the traffic rules.

It is not enough to ban just the beacons. What about other princely favours and freebies like the treatments at the airports (no need to stand in line), airplanes, free luxury accomodations and other royal benefits? We should also have this for all states ministers and MLA's. They are human beings like all of us and are supposed to serve us and not rule us like Maharajas (which is an unfair comparison. Some maharajas were really good to their people).

Many youth in our Country tries UPSC(IAS) exam's just because for the respect and for the VIP culture. UPSC is not an easy exam to crack, Needs out of the box thinking and these Students are paid high in private companies and abroad. They are ready to sacrifice the heavy salary for the VIP Culture. This decision will change the scenario. Henceforth Intelligent and capable youths will take up other Jobs and migrate to foreign countries for better jobs. UPSC will be filled with left overs and incapable work force.

Then the dirt will get cleansed, and we will have dedicated officers to serve public. We don't need Rocket scientists but dedicated simple human beings at panchayat office or DC office.
