Catholic Sabha Demands Holiday for Good Friday

Media Release

Mumbai, Mar 8: The Bombay Catholic Sabha has urged the labour commissioner of the Mint office to grant holiday for Good Friday to the Christian staff of the government mint.

A press release stated that a correspondence has been exchanged between the Christian staff and the general manager of the Mint office. Following the talks, the general manager approved the holiday and recommended that adjustment be made in the holiday calendar.

The release further stated that as per rules, every community has the right to get two festival/religious holidays in a year but Christians have been granted holiday only for Christmas so far. The Sabha alleged that such a move pointed towards discrimination against the Christian community.

The Sabha has also taken up the matter with the national commision for minorities and has also urged the finance minister to intervene to ensure that justice is done, stated the release.
