Mangalore, Feb 28: Social work students have a key role to play in the society and it is advisable for them to be involved in community service in remote villages in order to get the feel of living in country side, said K P Sucharita Shetty, president of Dakshina Kannada zilla panchayat.

Speaking at the valedictory ceremony of the two-day seminar on 'Civil Society - Conscience Keeper of the Nation,' organized by the MSW department of St Aloysius College (SAC) on Wednesday February 27, social workers should join politics to serve villages better, he said.

The government reserves a huge amount of funds for the welfare of rural people, but sadly it does not reach the needy. Therefore, social work students have the responsibility to ensure that the funds reach the beneficiaries, he asserted.

Fr Swebert D'Silva, principal of SAC said that social work students are always special for him because they always work for others. He also urged them to cultivate a sense of justice.

Fr Francis Serrao, rector of St Aloysius institutions presided over the programme.

Loveena Lobo and Jyothi were also present on the dais.

Issues like successful citizen movement in Goa, the role of media in creating awareness, challenges in social activism, problems of sex workers, raising civic consciousness etc, were discussed in the two-day seminar.
