Unreleased Tulu movies languish behind silver screens

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SP)

Mangaluru, Jan 27: Nearly 80 Tulu films were released in Coastalwood since the first ever Tulu film was released about 46 years back. At the same time, several have not seen the light of the day for various reasons and remained largely unknown.

Some such films are 'Sarpa Sankale' that was made in 1972, and later films, 'Kumkuma Sakshi', 'Bangarda Kural', Pingarada Poo, Namma Bhagya, Poojeda Poo, Modeda Bile, Ponna Manas, Mari Gadu, and 1995 movie Nirel. While Bangarda Kural, filming of which had commenced in 1974, and Nirel, have not been released, films bearing these names were released in 2012 and 2014 respectively under different banners.

One of the most important Tulu movie that was not released was 'Namma Bhagya' made in 1982 with well-known Kannada movie star, Manjula in the lead. It was made by actor and producer, K N Tailor, under the banner of 'Ganapati Films'. This film, for which heavy investment was made, was in two languages, Kannada and Tulu, for which dubbing was completed. Aroor Pattabhi had directed this movie, which had star cast of Sundarakrishna Aras, Rajesh, Tara etc. The non-release of this movie was a huge setback for Coastalwood, many believe even now.

Stalwarts connected with films analyze that most of the movies that have not hit the silver screen failed to do so because of inexperience of the producers who do not foresee problems, financial implications, technical aspects etc and also stumble because of improper planning and lack of technical knowledge.
