Bengaluru, Sep 8: Karnataka ration card holders have been urged to complete the e-KYC (electronic Know Your Customer) process before September 30, 2026, to ensure that their ration card benefits continue without interruption.
The food and civil supplies department has initiated an e-KYC drive across the state, with beneficiaries required to verify their identities through Aadhaar-based biometric authentication. The exercise is aimed at updating ration card records, verifying beneficiaries, and identifying cases where cardholders may have died or become ineligible.
Food and civil supplies minister Rizwan Arshad has urged ration card beneficiaries, including BPL and APL cardholders, to complete their KYC by the end of September. The state has also temporarily put the revision and cancellation of additional BPL ration cards on hold amid complaints from eligible beneficiaries.
The e-KYC exercise is particularly important as the government seeks to establish an updated and accurate database of ration card beneficiaries.
How to check ration card e-KYC status
Ration cardholders can check the e-KYC status of individual family members online by following these steps:

Visit the official Karnataka Food Department website: Open ahara.kar.nic.in on a mobile browser such as Google Chrome.

Select e-Services: On the homepage, tap the three-line menu and select the 'e-Services' option.

Choose e-Ration Card: Select 'e-Ration Card' and then click on 'Show RCs' / 'Ration Card Details'.

Select your zone: Depending on your location, choose either the Bengaluru division or the other districts division.

Enter your ration card number: Select 'RC Status', enter your 12-digit ration card number, and click 'Go'.

Check individual member status: The names of all family members listed on the ration card will appear on the screen.

Look for the e-KYC status: 'Success' in green indicates that the member's e-KYC has been completed. 'Pending' or a blank status indicates that the member's e-KYC has not yet been completed.

How to complete ration card e-KYC
Since biometric authentication is required, beneficiaries generally need to complete the process offline.

Visit the fair price shop: All members whose names appear on the ration card should visit the fair price shop (FPS) from which the family normally receives its ration. They should carry their Aadhaar details and ration card number.

Provide biometric authentication: At the shop, the beneficiary can use the e-PoS (electronic Point of Sale) machine to provide their fingerprint, generally through Aadhaar-based biometric verification.
The e-KYC process is being carried out through fair price shops across Karnataka. However, technical and server-related problems have been reported at some locations, causing difficulties for beneficiaries. If there is a technical problem at the concerned fair price shop, beneficiaries can enquire about completing the process through nearby Grama One, Karnataka One, or Bengaluru One centres, where applicable.
What happens if e-KYC is not completed?
Beneficiaries are being urged not to wait until the last date to complete the process. Failure to complete the required verification could result in the concerned member's status being affected during subsequent verification or ration-card database updates. There have also been concerns that beneficiaries who fail to complete KYC could face disruption in access to ration-related benefits.
However, the claim that free rice will automatically be stopped immediately for every person who fails to complete e-KYC by September 30 should not be interpreted as an automatic cancellation without reference to the department's applicable orders and subsequent action. The state government has said that completing e-KYC will help determine the actual number of eligible and ineligible beneficiaries before further action is taken on ration cards.
Why is the government conducting e-KYC?
The verification exercise is intended to update ration card records and establish the actual beneficiary base. It can help identify deceased cardholders, duplicate or incorrect records, and beneficiaries who may no longer meet eligibility requirements.
The exercise comes against the backdrop of the state's earlier BPL ration-card revision drive. The Centre had flagged several lakh BPL cards in Karnataka as potentially ineligible, leading to a verification exercise. Following complaints that some eligible beneficiaries were being removed, the state government temporarily halted further BPL card cancellations pending a detailed review.
The government has indicated that the e-KYC exercise will help provide a clearer picture before decisions are taken regarding potentially ineligible cards.
